WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball dropped the first of its three-game weekend series against Oklahoma State Friday night at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, 7-2.
Although the Bears were only out-hit 11-8, BU left nine men on base and couldn’t overcome OSU’s eight extra-base hits on the night. Cowboys starter Harrison Bodendorf improved to 9-1 after fanning seven Bears over six innings and lowered his season ERA to 2.54, tied for second in the Big 12.
For Baylor, senior shortstop Tyriq Kemp continued his breakout season, logging three hits for the fifth time this year and bringing his multi-hit game total to a team-leading 17, tying senior designated hitter Hunter Simmons. Redshirt senior outfielder Enzo Apodaca also recorded his 14th multi-hit performance of the year to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.
THE RUNDOWN
Sophomore southpaw Mason Green started things on the mound for the Bears and looked sharp early on, hurling three scoreless frames and fanning three while allowing only two hits. BU had chances to open the scoring but couldn’t cash in, leaving two aboard in the first and a runner at third in the third.
OSU took the game’s first lead in the top of the fourth, plating three on an RBI single that was sandwiched between an RBI groundout and a run-scoring double that hugged the third-base line.
Baylor responded in the home half, putting two runners into scoring position on a leadoff walk to senior outfielder Wesley Jordan and a double off the bat of freshman infielder Pearson Riebock. Redshirt senior infielder Will Pendergrass drove in Jordan with a groundout to shortstop to get the Bears on the board at 3-1.
The Cowboys countered with a run of their own in the top of the fifth, launching a solo home run over the right-field wall to swell the lead back to four. The Pokes added on again in the top of the seventh as a sacrifice fly followed up a triple to make it 5-1.
The Bears cut into the four-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh, as senior outfielder Ty Johnson led off the frame with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly from redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders. However, OSU knocked in another in the top of the eighth thanks to back-to-back knocks down the right-field line to extend the lead to 6-2. The Cowboys added some more insurance in the ninth, driving a solo home run over the wall in left-center.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On tonight’s game…
“Their hitters did a little more damage than our guys were able to do tonight, and their pitchers did a little bit better job than our pitchers did. I just think that it’s a baseball game, and they beat us tonight. When you start to close the gap, you’ve got to throw up a zero, and then they scratch one across, and now you’re fighting back again from where you were. I give them credit for that. They continued to add on and did a nice job that.”
