WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball dropped game two of its weekend series against Arizona State, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.

The Bears struggled offensively, mustering just one run on four hits against two Sun Devil pitchers who combined to strikeout 10 on the day. For BU on the bump, freshman lefty Carson Bailey logged his fourth quality start of the season, going six strong and allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while fanning six in the loss.

Freshman infielder Pearson Riebock drove in the lone run for Baylor, a sharp line drive into right field that put the Bears ahead 1-0 in the third inning. The knock marked Riebock’s 18th game of this season in which he recorded both a hit and an RBI.

THE RUNDOWN
Bailey pitched to contact well early on in his start, collecting groundball outs at a high rate and rolling two double plays in the first three innings to keep the game scoreless.

BU got on the board in the bottom half of the third as redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders got into scoring position following a single and a stolen base, setting up Riebock’s RBI shot down the right field line to give Baylor the early 1-0 advantage.

However, ASU answered right back in the top half of the fourth and took the lead as a double steal with two outs put a pair of baserunners in scoring position and a two-strike single to left chased both runs home.

>From there, Bailey settled in nicely and picked up four more strikeouts across the final eight batters he faced to keep the Bears within striking distance.

ASU padded its lead off senior right-hander Caleb Bunch with single runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings, opening up a 4-1 lead late in the ballgame.

BU was unable to get to reliever Jaden Alba as he tossed the final four innings without allowing a run and surrendered just one hit and one walk to the Bears, evening up the series at one win apiece.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On finding resilience for tomorrow’s rubber match…
“We didn’t have many balls hit hard, and I think that’s part of their guy lulling you to sleep. We just didn’t take many good swings. The guys were trying, there’s no question about that. And we’ll show up tomorrow and be ready to go again. We’ll be ready to compete.”

WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (29-17, 10-13) and Arizona State (31-17, 15-9) return to Baylor Ballpark for a rubber match on Sunday, May 4, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
