LAWRENCE, Kan. – Baylor baseball couldn’t overcome an eight-run third inning from the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday, falling by a final of 14-7 in game two of the weekend series at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence, Kan.
Despite a 4-RBI day at the plate by redshirt senior designated hitter Hunter Simmons and three home runs from Simmons, senior infielder Tyriq Kemp and redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders, the Bears were unable to slow down the KU bats, who hit six home runs in the series-clinching victory.
BU had its chances, but left 11 men on base after racking up 12 hits and never pulled within five runs after the eight-run third.
THE RUNDOWN
Baylor took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first after redshirt senior outfielder Enzo Apodaca walked and wheeled around to third on senior outfielder Wesley Jordan’s ground-rule double. Simmons then delivered an RBI groundout to open the scoring.
After left-handed starter Bryson Bales went one time through the KU lineup without allowing a hit, he wasn’t able to escape the third inning as the Jayhawks put up eight runs in the bottom of the third on two solo home runs, a two-run homer, a two-run double, an RBI double and an RBI single to climb in front, 8-1.
Simmons added to his RBI total for the day in the top of the fourth with his second long ball of the season, a two-run blast that cut the deficit to 8-3. But Kansas answered right back with three more in the home half off a solo shot, a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout to make it 11-3.
In the top of the fifth, Simmons stayed hot with a run-scoring single, giving him four RBIs on the day and matching his career high. Baylor threatened for more in the sixth by loading the bases, but failed to score and trailed 11-4 headed to the seventh.
In the bottom half of the inning, KU added two more on its fifth home run of the day, pushing the lead to 13-4. Kemp got a couple back for the Bears in the top of the eighth with his second homer of the season, but another KU solo shot in the bottom of the frame kept it an eight-run advantage at 14-6.
Sanders launched an opposite field solo shot in the top of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to spark a rally as Kansas claimed the series.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On today’s ballgame…
“We had some opportunities today with guys on and the right guys at the plate, we just couldn’t get a couple big hits that would’ve given us a chance. We knew with the wind blowing out today that you couldn’t have enough and weren’t ever going to be out of it, so just had to keep going and I liked that the guys did. I was disappointed that we didn’t pitch better. We’ve got to show up tomorrow; every one of these count and tomorrow is huge. We need to come out of here with a win if we can do it.”
WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (13-5, 0-2) looks to salvage the series with Kansas (17-2, 2-0) in the series finale on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. from Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence, Kan.
