WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball slugged its way to a 9-4 win over Loyola Marymount on Friday night at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, launching four home runs, including a pair from redshirt senior outfielder Enzo Apodaca.

BU (10-3) benefitted from a first-inning blast by senior outfielder Wesley Jordan and an inside-the-park homer by redshirt sophomore infielder Jack Little as part of its nine-run, 13-hit offensive display.

On the mound, Bears’ starter junior lefty Ethan Calder tossed five strong innings and allowed three runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Senior righty Will Glatch provided 2.2 scoreless frames in relief, while junior right-hander Grayson Murry and fifth-year senior righty Andrew Petrowski fanned three of the six batters they faced.

THE RUNDOWN
Baylor wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Jordan followed an Apodaca double by crushing a two-run moonshot in the bottom of the first.

After Calder struck out the side in the second, LMU tallied its first run in the third on a sacrifice fly to cut the BU lead in half. However, the Bears responded in the bottom of the inning with redshirt senior designated hitter Hunter Simmons providing an RBI single, one of his three hits on the evening.

In the fourth, Baylor piled on with back-to-back home runs from Little and Apodaca, a bases-loaded walk drawn by senior outfielder Ty Johnson and a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior infielder Hunter Teplanszky that made it 7-1.

An RBI triple from freshman infielder Pearson Riebock added another tally in the fifth, but the Lions answered with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth to cut the BU advantage to 8-3.

That’s when Glatch entered and retired all eight batters he faced before handing the ball off to Murry to finish the eighth inning. Apodaca’s second home run of the night cushioned the Bears lead at 9-3, though LMU added one in the ninth.

Petrowski sealed the win with a pair of strikeouts in the final inning as Baylor claimed its 10th victory of the season.

STAT OF THE DAY

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On the offensive production tonight…
“We were really grinding out at-bats. We were able to run the pitch count up on a good arm, and then we were able to hit some balls hard. We hit some out of the ballpark, the top-seven guys in our lineup all got RBIs, so it was good to see the offense click.”

Redshirt Senior OF Enzo Apodaca
On which of his two home runs he enjoyed more…
“I’ve never left [the yard] to center field before. The scouting report right before I was going up to hit said to see the breaking ball up and try to hit it to center field. So, that’s what I did, luckily enough. I was able to get that pitch and execute on it, so I thought that was really cool.

Senior RHP Will Glatch
On being able to contribute to the win…
“It’s been a lot of fun so far. I’m glad that I can be a part of this team and help us continue to keep winning games.”

WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (10-3) and Loyola Marymount (8-6) return to Baylor Ballpark for game two of the weekend series on Saturday, March 8, at 2 p.m.
