WACO, Texas – The Baylor men’s tennis team welcomes three matches this weekend as No. 10 San Diego, New Mexico and Rice travel to Waco. Each match will be at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.

Baylor (3-2) is coming off its 26th straight win against SMU (5-2) in Dallas last weekend, 4-2. The effort was led by No. 25 Devin Badenhorst, where he defeated SMU’s No. 48 Trevor Svajda in two sets.

On Friday, Jan. 31, the Bears face No. 10 San Diego at 6 p.m. This is the second-ever meeting between these teams. Their only other meeting was in the NCAA Tournament in College Station May of last year. The tight match included four tiebreakers as San Diego defeated Baylor, 4-1.

The Bears’ shot at redemption should feature several marquee matchups. Both squads feature three players in the top 75 in singles and four ranked doubles pairs. Spectators could witness a top five clash between San Diego’s No. 1 Tarvet/Klaassen and Baylor’s No. 3 Miladinovic/Brostrom Poulsen.

On Sunday, the Bears have a doubleheader against New Mexico and Rice. They have not seen action against either team in over a decade.

New Mexico will play their first match of the spring season against SMU Jan. 31. Their third match in three days, they come to Hawkins to play the Bears on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 12 p.m. Baylor leads the series all-time at 4-1, but they haven’t played since the 1999.

That evening at 5 p.m., Baylor hosts Rice (3-2). Rice leads the Bears all-time 25-5, but their last meeting was in 2010. Rice has not defeated Baylor since 1996.

The Owls have notched wins against UTRGV and Prairie View A&M but lost two straight in Austin. Their losses came at the hands of No. 1 Texas and Arkansas.

Baylor will have their doubles point cut out for them. The Owls boast two ranked doubles pairs: No. 43 Kapasi/De La Bassetiere and No. 118 Morais/Mandelbaum. Thus far, Kapasi/De La Bassetiere’s only loss has been to Texas’ No. 7 Legout/Brown.

After this home stand, the Bears will head to Nebraska to face the Huskers on Feb. 7 before playing No. 3 Ohio State in Columbus on Feb. 9.
