LUBBOCK, Texas – Baylor track & field kicked off Day One of the Corky Classic at Texas Tech’s Sports Performance Center. Molly Haywood continued to shine in her sophomore season, breaking her indoor PR with a 14-5.5 mark in women’s pole vault to take home gold, her second consecutive meet finishing in first place.



THE RUNDOWN

Closing out the day for Baylor, Haywood, the U20 World Champion, clinched her first place finish at the 14-1.75 mark. Aiming to break a new personal best, Haywood went for the 14-5.5 mark and cleared it on the first try. Haywood’s vault currently puts her at No. 1 in the country and No. 10 in World rankings.



On the track, Alexis Brown debuted in the 60m race this season and didn’t hold back. Brown advanced all the way to the finals out of the 96-athlete field and placed in 4th with a time of 7.34. In the semifinals, Brown recorded a 7.28 time, just 0.03 seconds shy of her PR.



Among Brown competing in the 60m, Michaela Francois, Royaltee Brown and Hannah Lowe all raced and made it to the semifinals. Both freshmen in Brown and Lowe broke their indoor PRs in the first round with Brown at 7.34 and Lowe at 7.40 to advance to the semifinals. Francois won her heat with a 7.41 time to advance. In the semifinals, Brown barely missed the cutoff line to advance to the finals, finishing 10th and just 0.04 seconds behind the top-eight qualifying time.



In the men’s 60m, Laurenz Colbert won his heat with a time of 6.76 to advance to the semifinals. Colbert went on and finished 22nd in the semis.



Reigning Big 12 Athlete of the Week, Demar Francis, competed in the 400m and finished 6th overall with a time of 46.69. The time currently ranks 3rd in the Big 12 and 8th in the country.



In the long jump competition, freshman Janae De Gannes continued to show impressive marks as she finished 3rd with an indoor PR mark of 21-1.25. Gannes jump currently ranks No. 1 for freshman and 9th overall in the country.



WHAT’S NEXT

Baylor continues Texas Tech's Corky Classic on Saturday, with the first Bear beginning at 11 a.m in the men’s shot put. The meet will be streamed on ESPN+.
