WACO, Texas -- Former Notre Dame and Abilene Christian linebacker Kevin Washington, who spent the last eight years as the Director of Player Development for Texas football, has been named Baylor’s new Associate AD for Mission Impact and Enrichment/Athletics Chaplain, it was announced on Tuesday.
Washington joins the Bears after eight years as the Director of Player Development for Texas Football, taking on that role in 2016. Also while working at Texas, he directed the counseling ministry at High Pointe Baptist Church. He previously served as a campus director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at the University of Houston from 2014-16, which followed a three-year tenure as the Tri-College Director with FCA at Abilene Christian, Hardin-Simmons and McMurry.
Washington will work directly with Baylor’s student-athletes, coaches and staff to support individual and collective spiritual growth and discipleship while operating within the Christian community of the University. Among a multitude of unique spiritually driven responsibilities, he will also serve as a strategic consultant for team domestic and international mission opportunities, oversee Baylor’s industry leading chaplaincy program and serve in a pastoral function for Baylor’s student-athletes, coaches and staff.
“We are thrilled to welcome Kevin Washington to Baylor to lead our Sports Ministry team” said Juliana Smith, Executive Senior Associate AD for Mission Impact & Enrichment. “I am grateful that we were able to connect with Kevin when we did and that he accepted the invitation to lead our ministry efforts at such a pivotal time not only in college athletics, but also in the lives of our student-athletes and our staff members and coaches who support them. Kevin’s background, experience, and heart for the Lord are the exact fit to continue furthering our mission of preparing champions for life specifically in the area of spiritual growth—a distinct pillar of Baylor Athletics.”
Washington served as the head strength & conditioning coach for ACU’s men’s and women’s basketball teams from 2012-14, and during that period founded and operated Doulos Athletes LLC., a faith-based athletics training company that supported collegiate student-athletes in training and mentoring youth athletes.
“My athletics career started in ministry,” Washington said. “It was ministry and the opportunity to tangibly serve student-athletes that took me to Texas. Over the years, I’ve made it my mission to help people connect their faith and performance in order to thrive in both, and perform the way they were created to. Baylor, and their mission, is a perfect fit. Baylor stands alone in their commitment to compete at the highest levels while striving to make eternal impact. This is the type of opportunity you only dream about, and can’t believe actually exists. I can’t thank Mack Rhoades, Juliana Smith, and the members of the Baylor athletics family for allowing me to join the work they’re doing.
He double majored in sociology and film & television while earning his degree at Notre Dame, before earning a master’s in communications at Abilene Christian, where he wrapped up his playing career from 2009-10. He also earned a master’s from The Master’s University in Biblical Counseling and is currently working on his Doctorate in Biblical Counseling from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
He prepped as a high school athlete at Fort Bend Austin in Sugar Land, Texas.
Washington and his wife, Jordan, have two children, Korrie (two) and Kannon (three months).
