WACO, Texas -- Baylor running back Bryson Washington – who shattered the program standard for rushing yards in a season by a freshman – has been named Freshman All-America by the Football Writers Association of America, it was announced on Tuesday afternoon.

A native of Franklin, Texas, Washington was one of two tailbacks listed on the FWAA Freshman All-America team and one of 14 offensive players. A 6-foot, 203-pound redshirt freshman, Washington set the Baylor freshman record with 1,028 rushing yards, on 175 carries, while scoring 12 rushing TDs. He also caught 22 balls for 217 yards and a score.

Washington ranked third among NCAA freshman in rushing yards and TDs. Despite missing the first two games of the year due to injury, Washington averaged 113.2 all-purpose yards per game and 93.5 rushing yards per game.

He had six games with at least 100 yards rushing, including four straight games to end the regular season. After opening the Kinder’s Texas Bowl with five carries for 24 yards, Washington suffered an injury that ended his game and kept him from five straight 100+ yard games. In his starting debut vs. Air Force, Washington had 12 carries for 106 yards and a TD. He found his groove with a two-score game on 10 carries and 116 yards in a beatdown of Texas Tech in Lubbock, following by 78 yards on 17 carries vs. Oklahoma State. A four-TD game on 26 carries and 196 yards vs. TCU started a stretch of four straight 100-yard games. He went for three rushing TDs and a receiving TD on 18 carries for 123 yards, adding 59 yards receiving, in a win at West Virginia. After 113 yards at Houston, Washington had 192 yards and two TDs on 28 carries vs. Kansas.

Washington is the fifth Baylor player to earn FWAA Freshman All-America honors since the award was conceptualized in 2001 and the first since Richard Reese in 2022.
