FORT WORTH, Texas – Baylor baseball won its series finale at No. 23 TCU on Sunday, 6-3, behind 5.2 combined scoreless innings of relief from redshirt sophomore Lucas Davenport and sixth-year senior Gabe Craig.
Davenport allowed just three hits in 3.2 shutout frames and picked up his third win of the season, while Craig earned a six-out save, his seventh of the season, and struck out five of the seven batters he faced.
Three Bears tallied multi-hit games in redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders, freshman infielder Pearson Riebock and senior outfielder Ty Johnson, who’s clutch two-out, two-strike, two-run single cushioned Baylor’s lead in the sixth inning. Redshirt senior designated hitter Hunter Simmons also produced a two-run triple as part of BU’s four-run third inning to help the Bears take their first lead of the weekend.
With the win, Baylor avoided a sweep for the third time this season and continued its stretch with at least one win in every Big 12 series so far this year.
THE RUNDOWN
TCU got the scoring started in the first, knocking a leadoff double into the right-field gap and later bringing the runner home on a sacrifice fly, but junior southpaw starter Ethan Calder did well to limit damage early on.
BU responded in the third, plating four runs in the frame thanks to back-to-back RBI singles from Sanders and senior infielder Tyriq Kemp ahead of Simmons’ two-run triple, opening up a 4-1 lead through three innings.
Calder had racked up four strikeouts and allowed just one run on three hits before running into a little trouble in the fourth, as the Frogs cut into the lead with a soft line drive that found the outfield and scored a run. With the bases loaded and just one out, the Bears turned to Davenport out of the pen, who escaped further peril with a line out and a groundout after TCU made it 4-3 with an RBI infield single.
The two sides traded scoreless frames in the fifth before Baylor padded its lead in the top of the sixth. After senior outfielder Wesley Jordan walked and Riebock collected one of his two hits on the day, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. With two outs and down in an 0-2 count, Johnson shot a ball through the right side of the infield to extend the lead to 6-3 heading to the home half.
Davenport continued to cruise on the mound, getting through the seventh before handing the ball off to BU’s closer, who came on for what amounted to tie his longest outing of the season. Craig fanned the side in the eighth, then picked up two more punchouts in the ninth in securing the series-salvaging victory for the Bears.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On heading into the final stretch of the season…
“We need to go win [the three remaining series]. And we’re going to fight our tail off to do that. We will celebrate this one for the rest of the day, then we’ll take a breath and get ready to go on Tuesday, but we have a lot ahead of us. We’re playing pretty good defense for the most part, we’re in a lot of games, so I’m proud of the team. We just have to keep battling.”
Redshirt Sophomore RHP Lucas Davenport
On gaining confidence from today’s win…
“It’s a great build game. We’re going to build from here, going into next week against Arizona State. I think we’re in a really good spot. This team will always compete, I know that. We’re always going to do our best and when we do that, you’re always going to get games like today’s win.”
Senior OF Ty Johnson
On what this win means for the team…
“I feel like that kind of embodies what our team’s been the entire year, just responding. We haven’t been able to do that as well as we had earlier these past couple of weeks. But now is the time to start getting this thing rolling, and that was a statement win today, for sure.”
WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (27-16) heads to Huntsville on Tuesday, April 29, to face Sam Houston (9-35) at Don Sanders Stadium for its final road midweek matchup of the season. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
