FORT WORTH, Texas – Baylor baseball dropped its series opener at No. 23 TCU Friday night, 7-2, at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth.
The Bears were unable to overcome a four-run first inning by the Horned Frogs, though BU did bring the tying run to the on-deck circle in the top of the ninth. Big 12 ERA leader and TCU Friday starter right-hander Tommy LaPour threw 123 pitches and was unable to finish the complete game, going 8.2 innings and fanning eight while allowing just two runs and walking three.
At the plate, senior outfielder Wesley Jordan tallied his 11th multi-hit performance of the year and redshirt senior designated hitter Hunter Simmons drove in both of BU’s runs for his sixth multi-RBI effort of the season.
Baylor’s bullpen was competitive, stringing together 7.1 innings and allowing just three runs between four different arms. Sophomore southpaw RJ Ruais was sharp in his inning, punching out a season-high two batters in his scoreless appearance.
THE RUNDOWN
TCU started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, plating two on back-to-back free passes with the bases loaded before a BU throwing error allowed two more to cross the pay station giving the Horned Frogs an early 4-0 advantage.
The Bears answered back in the top of the second as Jordan led things off with a double down the left field line and came around to score on Simmons’ RBI knock.
In the home half, TCU added to its advantage with an RBI fielder’s choice to push the lead back to four runs heading into the third inning.
Sixth-year senior right-hander Patrick Hail came on in the fourth and immediately rolled a double play ball to get BU out of a jam and keep the deficit within striking distance. Hail continued his strong relief outing into the fifth, retiring the Frogs side in order with a strikeout.
However, TCU increased the gap to 6-1 in the back half of the sixth, loading the bases and plating one on an RBI single, but that’s all that would come across as Hail was able to limit the damage.
Ruais entered to start the seventh and faced the minimum, striking out two and keeping the Bears in it. But, a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth tacked on another for the Frogs at 7-1.
In the top of the ninth, the Bears loaded the bases on LaPour with two outs and a walk forced in a run, ending the Frogs’ starter’s night. A long flyout off the bat of redshirt senior first baseman Will Pendergrass ended the night, leaving the potential tying run in the on-deck circle and sealing the series opener for the home team.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On tonight’s game…
“I’m disappointed that we got behind the eight ball, because what ended up happening the rest of the game is we had 7.1 innings from the bullpen, and it wasn’t perfect either. We had too many walks, too many hit batters, too many errors, but at the same time, we only gave up three runs. We pitched out of trouble and we competed, and I know tomorrow we’ll compete as hard as we can again. I like this bunch and this group. We hung in there, for the most part. We were one hitter away from the tying run there in the ninth, so we’ve just got to respond tomorrow.”
WHAT’S NEXT
