TULSA, Okla. — Baylor men's golf closed its season with a tie for 14th at the Big 12 Championship on Thursday at Southern Hills.

BU strung together its best round of the week for a second-straight day to finish with a 69-over 1,189, which tied with UCF. The Bears’ effort was spearheaded by a good showing from Jonas Appel in his first full Big 12 Championship appearance. The Encinitas, Calif., native shot a final-round 70 to finish the week with an 11-over 291, good enough to tie for 29th.

Oklahoma State dominated the final three rounds to take the championship with a 2-under 1,118, nine shots in front of second-place Arizona State. Cowboy Preston Stout claimed individual medalist honors with a 3-under 277, one of just two players to finish the week in red figures.

THE RUNDOWN
Appel started with back-to-back bogeys, dropping him to 2-over to start the round. He would recover nicely, though, with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 13 and 14 to turn at even. He played an even inward half as well, with a bogey at No. 4 and a birdie at No. 9 for the second straight day.

Davis Ovard finished a solid week with a 3-over 73 to claim a tie for 34th. The Frisco, Texas, native jumped into red numbers early with a birdie at No. 12 but closed his first nine with bogeys at Nos. 15 and 18. A birdie at No. 11 erased a bogey at No. 10 before he finished out his round with two more bogeys at Nos. 4 and 9.

Sam Dossey was strong in his Big 12 Championship debut, shooting a 3-over 73. A birdie at No. 15 offset a bogey at the opening hole to get back to even. The junior would turn at 1-over after a bogey at No. 17. He settled in with seven straight pars to open his inward nine before two bogeys at Nos. 8 and 9 dropped him to 3-over.

Vincent Stjernfeldt finished off the week with a second-straight 75. At 3-over through his first two holes, the freshman bounced back with a birdie at No. 2 to get back to 2-over, only to drop four shots with an eight at No. 17. Making the turn in 41, he made one more bogey at No. 1. Still, he finished strong, playing his final eight holes at 2-under with birdies at Nos. 2 and 7.

Zach Heffernan closed his Baylor career with a 13-over 83 to finish tied for 68th.

HIGHLIGHTS

  * Jonas Appel has improved his score in each of his five-career Big 12 Championship rounds.

QUOTABLE
Head coach McGraw — "This was obviously not the performance we were looking for this week. I love that we got to compete on this fantastic golf course, but it will really test you and expose your flaws, and we ran into some of that this week. I thought we saw some good things from some guys, just not enough to compete. We know we have some work to do this offseason to put ourselves back in the regional conversation for next year, and I know we’ll do that.”

STAT OF THE DAY
4.33 — with a stroke average of 4.33, No. 9 played as the fourth-hardest hole this week, yielding only 32 birdies in 319 total rounds, with Jonas Appel claiming two of those birdies
