ARLINGTON, Texas – Baylor baseball won a back-and-forth extra-innings contest at UT Arlington Tuesday night, 9-8, behind a late knock from senior catcher Cortlan Castle and some strong outings from the back end of the BU bullpen.

Castle delivered a two-out, two-strike RBI double in the top of the 10th to put the Bears up for good and junior right-hander Grayson Murry locked things down to earn his first-career save.

Senior outfielder Wesley Jordan had a big day at the plate with three hits and two RBIs, including his team-leading ninth home run of the season, and freshman infielder Pearson Riebock added three hits and two RBIs of his own to spark the Bears offensively.

On the mound, five Bears turned in scoreless outings and four struck out at least two batters in helping Baylor erase a 7-4 deficit and come away with the victory.

THE RUNDOWN
BU jumped on the Mavericks right away for three runs in the top of the first on an RBI double by redshirt senior designated hitter Hunter Simmons and a two-run single off the bat of Riebock. After UTA plated one in the home half, Baylor answered right back in the top of the second with an RBI knock from Castle, his 100th-career hit, to make it 4-1.

However, the Mavericks went on to score the next six runs, including two in the bottom of the second and four in the third to open up a 7-4 advantage through the first three frames.

Redshirt senior right-hander Cole Stasio entered to get the final out of the third and fanned the side in the fourth, then Jordan crushed his ninth home run of the year, a solo shot, in the top of the fifth to pull the Bears back within two runs at 7-5.

As sixth-year seniors Patrick Hail and Bryson Bales held the Mavs scoreless through the middle innings, Baylor retook the lead in the top of the seventh as redshirt sophomore infielder Jack Little walked, stole a base, advanced on an error and then scored on a wild pitch before Jordan doubled in leadoff man Enzo Apodaca to knot the scoreline. Jordan then crossed the plate on another wild pitch to put the Bears back in front, 8-7.

In the home half, Bales handed it off to senior Hunter Teplanszky, who struck out both of the two batters he faced to end the seventh inning. BU threatened for more in the top of the eighth, but was unable to add to the lead and stranded the bases loaded. Sixth-year senior righty Gabe Craig entered with a man on and nobody out in the bottom of the eighth, and after a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, a wild pitch allowed the tying run to score and the two sides were deadlocked, 8-8, headed to the ninth.

Both sides went down quietly in the ninth, but BU threatened first in the 10th as senior outfielder Ty Johnson bunted for a base hit and wheeled around to third base on UTA’s fourth error of the night. It was Castle who came through clutch with a two-out RBI double to give Baylor the late advantage.

Murry entered in the bottom of the 10th and despite walking the first batter he faced, earned his first-career save with two strikeouts in a scoreless frame.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On the comeback victory…
“I thought we had some guys step up and pitch the ball really well. We played good defense and it ended up basically winning the game for us. I’m proud of our guys. It was a good, hard-fought win. We did enough to get the W and we’re happy with it.”

To the fans ahead of this weekend’s series against Utah…
“We need big crowds out here, it’s a big weekend for us. Don’t give up on these guys, these guys have a lot of heart and a lot of fight in them.”

Junior RHP Grayson Murry
On earning the save…
“It’s obviously different with a save on the line and we’re up by one, it’s a big moment. But I try to attack it the same way as any other game I’ve pitched. Whatever the moment is, I’m in there for a reason and just trying to get the team a win.”

Senior OF Wesley Jordan
On providing a spark at the plate…
“I just happened to be the guy there. Somebody, one through nine, was going get us going again. We knew we weren’t out of it. I just happened to be the guy in that situation. I’m feeling pretty good right now, but just trying to bottle it and keep it going as long as I can.”
