HOCKLEY, Texas — Baylor women's golf ended Tuesday in a tie for 12th with Texas Tech at The Big 12 Championship at Houston Oaks.

Houston native Ashleen Kaur led the Bears in round one with a 1-over 72 to sit tied for 10th after 18 holes. The sophomore is just three shots off the pace set by Arizona’s Carolina Melgrati, Houston’s Maelynn Kim and Kansas State’s Carla Bernat.

Needing seven head-to-head wins this week in a 14-team field, BU's 17-over 301 is two shots behind a three-way tie for ninth. Iowa State and Arizona hold the overnight lead after a pair of 1-over 285s.

THE RUNDOWN
Starting on No. 10, Kaur made a couple of early bogeys on her outward half at Nos. 10 and 15 but closed her first nine with a birdie at No. 16. A bogey at No. 1 dropped her back to 2-over before she played her final six holes at 1-under, thanks to birdies at Nos. 4 and 8, around a bogey at No. 6.

Silje Ohma finished Tuesday in a tie for 39th after a 4-over 75. An uneven start saw her make birdies at Nos. 11 and 13 around double-bogeys at Nos. 12 and 14. The junior settled in with six-straight pars ahead of three more bogeys at Nos. 3, 5 and 7. Ohma closed with a birdie at the last hole to get back to 4-over for the round.

Sera Hasegawa shot a 6-over 77 to tie for 49th on day one. After starting with four pars, the senior carded three bogeys on her next four holes before a birdie at No. 18 got her to the turn with a 2-over 38. The Gifu, Japan, native played her first four holes of the second nine at 4-over with a triple-bogey at No. 2 and a bogey at No. 3. She closed at even par over the final five holes after birdies at Nos. 5 and 9 around bogeys at Nos. 6 and 7.

BaiMai Seema also tied for 49th with a 77 on Tuesday. She bounced back from a bogey at her opening hole with four straight pars. Two more bogeys at Nos. 15 and 18 bookended a birdie at No. 16 to turn at 2-over. Five more bogeys bit Seema on the second nine at Nos. 2, 4, 6, 7 and 9 around a birdie at No. 5.

Bridget Boczar tied for 61st in her Big 12 Championship debut. Three Bogeys on the outward half at Nos. 10, 12 and 18 preceded five more bogeys on the inward half for a first-round 79.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Ashleen Kaur tied for the best par-5 scoring average in round one with a 4.25.
  *   Sera Hasegawa tied for the second-best par-3 scoring average on Tuesday (2.80).
  *   At 4.50, Silje Ohma tied for the second-best par-5 scoring average.
