Baylor Baseball Comes Up Short in Series Finale at Texas Tech, 9-8
Red Raiders erase BU’s early 5-0 to steal series victory

LUBBOCK, Texas – Baylor baseball came up short, 9-8, to Texas Tech in Sunday’s series finale at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock.

Redshirt senior outfielder Enzo Apodaca had two hits and a home run while senior infielder Tyriq Kemp stayed hot with a three-hit day, including two RBI doubles to spark the BU offense. Redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders picked up another multi-hit game, finishing the weekend series with eight knocks against his former team.

Though the Bears held an early 5-0 lead, the Red Raiders stormed back to erase the deficit and charge in front in the fifth inning, a lead which Baylor could not overcome.

THE RUNDOWN
Apodaca got things going quickly with a sharp single up the middle to lead off the ballgame, then scored on Kemp’s RBI double two batters later. On the same play, Kemp wheeled around on a pair of Tech errors to give BU a quick 2-0 advantage.

In the second, Apodaca launched a two-run homer to left-center to double the Bears’ lead. Then Kemp delivered another RBI double to put Baylor ahead, 5-0.

In the home half, the Red Raiders got to BU starter sophomore southpaw Mason Green for three runs, including one that was unearned, on three hits and a Baylor error, cutting the lead to 5-3. Then in the bottom of the third, a two-run home run knotted the scoreline at 5 apiece.

After the two sides traded zeros in the fourth, the Bears retook the lead in the top of the fifth as Sanders singled in one and later scored on sophomore catcher JJ Kennett’s RBI groundout to make it 7-5. However, BU’s lead wouldn’t last long, as Texas Tech went in front for the first time in the bottom of the frame, plating three on three hits and two walks.

The Red Raiders added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly at 9-7, but Baylor got one back in the top of the seventh as redshirt sophomore infielder Jack Little brought Sanders in on a groundout.

In the late stages, BU was unable to get much going against Tech reliever Jack Cebert, who pitched the final four innings and allowed just two hits and the one run, sealing the series-deciding victory with his fourth win of the season.

HIGHLIGHTS
• The Bears recorded double-digit hits for the 16th time this season.
• Redshirt senior OF Enzo Apodaca hit his sixth home run of the season and logged his 18th game of the year with at least one hit and one RBI.
• Apodaca collected his 10th multi-hit and eighth multi-RBI games of the year.
• Senior INF Tyriq Kemp extended his hitting streak to 11 games and logged his 13th multi-hit and sixth multi-RBI games of the season.
• Freshman infielder Pearson Riebock logged his 13th multi-hit effort of the year.
• Redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders extended his hitting streak to six games and collected his ninth multi-hit game of the season.
• Senior RHP Will Glatch made his 10th scoreless appearance of the year.
• Sixth-year senior RHP Gabe Craig made his 12th scoreless appearance of the season and his ninth with multiple strikeouts.

8 – Redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders had eight hits in the weekend series against his former team.

“Disappointed to not come out of there with a W. We had our opportunities. It’s a tough one to lose. We came out and got after it, but couldn’t seem to add on. Had a few at-bats that kind of got away from us a little bit, but the guys competed hard. It’s a tough ballgame today. It’s just one of those things, you’re not going to win them all. It’s frustrating, it hurts, we wanted to win it, but we just couldn’t hold them down enough.”
