Bears unable to come from behind after bullpen holds Cougars scoreless over final seven frames

WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball fell in its series finale to Houston, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.

Both sides struck for early runs as the Cougars put up two tallies in each of the first two innings and the Bears got on the board with single scores in the home halves. However, BU (21-10, 5-7) couldn’t cash in on further chances and UH (18-13, 5-7) rode seven scoreless innings from its bullpen to a series-deciding victory.

Junior right-handed pitcher Grayson Murry worked a career-high three innings and matched his personal best with two strikeouts in relief. He was part of a Baylor bullpen that combined for seven-straight scoreless frames to end the ballgame, as redshirt sophomore righty Lucas Davenport, senior right-hander Will Glatch and sixth-year closer Gabe Craig each recorded scoreless appearances.

Three Bears logged multi-hit games in freshman infielder Pearson Riebock, senior outfielder Ty Johnson and senior catcher Cortlan Castle, but it wasn’t enough as the Coogs grabbed the win.

THE RUNDOWN
Houston got to BU starter Stefan Stahl early for two unearned runs in the top of the first on two hits and a Baylor error. But, the Bears would respond as a single from senior outfielder Wesley Jordan and a walk to Riebock preceded a two-out RBI knock by senior infielder Tyriq Kemp that cut the Cougars’ lead to 2-1.

UH plated another two runs in the top of the second on a two-run single to go ahead 4-1. BU countered with a run in the home half, as redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders tripled and later scored on Castle’s RBI single.

Murry took over on the mound in the third, entering with the bases loaded and nobody out but escaped danger after retiring all three batters he faced. Murry continued to keep the Coogs’ bats quiet with two more scoreless innings and kept Baylor within striking distance at 4-2 into the sixth.

The Bears left men in scoring position in both the sixth and the seventh innings, though Davenport did well in his two innings of work on the mound, retiring all six UH batters he faced with two punchouts. Glatch and Craig combined for three strikeouts over the final two frames, though BU wasn’t able to get to Houston’s closer, Antoine Jean, who struck out eight in his three innings on the mound, helping UH to the victory.

• Senior OF Wesley Jordan extended his on-base streak to 14 games.
• Freshman INF Pearson Riebock collected his 11th multi-hit game of the season and extended his on-base streak to five games.

• Senior OF Ty Johnson extended his on-base streak to eight games after notching his ninth multi-hit performance of the year.
• Redshirt sophomore INF Travis Sanders tripled for the first time in his career.
• Senior C Cortlan Castle logged his sixth multi-hit game of the season.
• Junior RHP Grayson Murry pitched a season-most three innings and matched his personal best with two strikeouts.
• Murry made his seventh scoreless appearance of 2025.
• Redshirt sophomore RHP Lucas Davenport made his third scoreless appearance of the season.
• Senior RHP Will Glatch made his ninth scoreless outing of the year.
• Sixth-year senior RHP Gabe Craig tallied his 11th scoreless appearance of the season.

“I thought our bullpen was fantastic. From the third inning on, going seven innings with just one hit, it gave us a chance to get back in the game. And we had some opportunities early. We were just hoping to get it done before [Antoine Jean came in]. We knew that their plan was going to bring him out. [Will] Glatch and [Gabe] Craig came back out there and gave us two really good innings. They looked like themselves again, and that’s a big deal for us. I’m disappointed we didn’t win today. We both pitched well, but they scored a couple early on us and we couldn’t get it back.”
