The Bears sweep the Pyramid event with all perfect scores and beat the Ducks

WACO, Texas – The No. 1-ranked Baylor acrobatics & tumbling team finished with a win against No. 2 Oregon, 287.795 - 283.305, on Saturday night at the Ferrell Center.

The Bears (9-0) defeated the Ducks (5-2) by 4.49 points to increase the winning streak to 47 meets. BU started the meet with a 0.27-point advantage in start value on Oregon.

The attendance record was broken for the NCATA and Baylor meet with 2351, while the record was also broken for most 10s in a meet with five.

To start off the meet in Compulsory, BU and Oregon all executed the required skills with a start value of 10 in each heat. In the Acro heat, Baylor scored a 9.75, and Oregon followed with an 9.90. BU took the Pyramid heat, 9.90 to 9.85. The Bears scored a 9.95 in the Toss, followed by Oregon's 9.85. In the Tumbling heat, BU scored an 8.90, the Ducks scoring 8.75. Through one event, the score was 38.50 to Oregon's 37.45.

To start the optional portion of the meet, BU and Oregon all executed the required skills with a start value of 10 in each heat. BU started the competition in the Acro event with their 5 Element heat, featuring Emily Bott as the first top and Leavy McDonald as the base, competing a high press, then Jordan Gruendler stepped in and performed the high handstand to straddle, scoring a perfect 10. The Ducks followed with a 9.90 score in their heat. In the synchronized 6 Element heat, with four different pairs of tops and bases (Alyiah Thomas/Meredith Wells, Cassie Karnbach/Gabby Kaminski, Payton Washington/Addi Grandy, and Addie Vezzosi/Ellie LaNeve), the Bears scored a 9.70, followed by 9.50 from Oregon. Washington and Thomas competed a high press, lowered, and pop-around before Vasquez and Hemby competed the inverted handstand. In the third heat, Gruendler and McDonald scored a perfect 10 after competing a new combination of skills – the stacked hands handstand to a one-handed handstand to one-handed. They are the only duo to compete these elements in the country. Oregon tied this 10 in its heat. For the Acro event, BU scored 29.70 to the Ducks' 29.30, now totaling 68.20 to 66.75 through two events, and Baylor leading by 1.45 points.

In the Pyramid event, BU and Oregon all executed the required skills with a start value of 10 in each heat. BU started it off with a perfect 10 score in the Inversion heat with Gruendler and McDonald with the one-handed handstand, and Oregon showed up with a 9.85. Topping the Synchronized heat were Washington and Bott, based by mid-level bases McDonald and Wells, respectively. They scored a perfect 10 on their high walk-in to extension, while the Ducks produced a 9.90. In the Open heat, Gruendler topped McDonald and competed the inverted high-handstand, scoring a perfect 10. Oregon scored the same in their Open heat. For the Pyramid event, Baylor scored a 30/30, while the Ducks scored a 29.75.

At the half, BU was up 98.20/100 to Oregon's 96.50/100, leading by 1.7 points.

To kick off the second half in the Toss event, it was Washington topping the Salto heat, competing the kick-double and finishing with a score of 9.80/10, followed by a 9.70/9.90 from Oregon. In the Synchronized heat, Washington and Gabby Kaminski were the tops, scoring 9.75/9.90, while the Ducks had a score of 9.55/9.90. In the final heat, the Open heat, Kaminski was the top, scoring a 9.85/9.90 with her back-double, whereas Oregon scored an 9.85/10. At the end of the Toss event, Baylor totaled 29.40/29.80, while the Ducks followed with a 29.10/29.80. Through four events, BU had a score of 127.600/129.80 while Oregon had a 125.600/129.80, the Bears up by 2 points.

In the Tumbling event, BU and Oregon all executed the required skills with a start value of 10 in each heat. Starting in the Duo for the Bears were Thomas and Rendino, who scored a 9.60 on their roundoff whip Arabian to roundoff back handspring back layout 540, tying the score from Oregon. In the Trio were Bott, Sophia Neylon, and Nova Schmit, competing a roundoff back handspring back layout 540 roundoff to whip back layout 360, earning a score of 9.65. The Ducks put up 9.45 against in their heat. In the Quad pass were Washington, Aliyah Kaloostian, Sarah Kerr, and Kaminski, scoring a 9.75 for their front punch to roundoff back handspring back layout 540 roundoff back layout 360, while Oregon put up a score of 9.60. For the Aerial pass, it was Thomas, who scored a 9.775 after competing a roundoff back handsping back layout 540 roundoff whip back layout 360, while Oregon earned an 9.80 score. Competing in the 6 Element heat was Bott competing a punch front back handspring back layout 540 roundoff whip back layout 360, earning a 9.875 score; Oregon earned a score of 9.925. Washington earned a 9.975 for the Open heat with a punch front roundoff back handspring back layout 540 roundoff back layout 360, with the Ducks showing up with a 9.90. Combined, Baylor had a score of 58.625/60 to finish the Tumbling event while Oregon had a score of 58.275/60. After five events, BU led 186.225/189.80 to 183.875/189.80, up by 2.35 points.

In the Team event, The Ducks performed, scoring a 99.43/109.14. Baylor competed and scored 101.57/109.41.

The meet was finalized, and BU came out on top with a 287.795/299.21 score against Oregon's 283.305/298.94; the Bears won by 4.49 points.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor broke its record of most perfect 10s scored in a meet with five - Acro 5 Element, Acro 7 Element, Inversion Pyramid, Synchronized Pyramid, Open Pyramid.
  *   It was the second time an event had all perfect scores for BU. The previous was in Pyramid at Oregon (3/12/2015).
  *   The Bears scored season-highs in seven heats, including the Acro 7 Element, Pyramid heats 1 and 2, Toss heat 3, and Tumbling heats 1, 2, and 3.
  *   A new attendance record was set for both NCATA and Baylor with 2,351.
  *   The Bears tied their season-high scores in six heats, including the Compulsory Acro, Compulsory Pyramid, Acro 5 Element, Pyramid heat 3, Toss heats 1 and 2.
  *   Baylor dropped two heats in Tumbling, the first heats lost since March 11.
  *   BU is on a 47-meet winning streak.
