FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Silje Ohma and Sera Hasegawa used a pair of 68s to pace Baylor women’s golf to a tie for fifth place after round one of the Mason Rudolph Championship on Friday.
On the heels of a 10-under 278, the Bears enter round two just a couple of shots back of the overnight leaders, South Carolina and Mississippi State, who recorded matching 12-under 276s.
Ohma and Hasegawa did most of their handy work on the opening nine, shooting 32 and 33, respectively, en route to their 68s, two of 20 rounds in the 60s on Friday. The Baylor duo is just three shots behind Mississippi State's Avery Weed, who grabbed the overnight lead with a 7-under 65.
THE RUNDOWN
Hasegawa started strong with back-to-back birdies to start the day at Nos. 10 and 11. She carded a bogey at No. 12 but quickly erased it with a pair of birdies at Nos. 14 and 17 to turn with a 3-under 33. A bogey at No. 1 dropped her back to 2-under until another set of birdies at Nos. 7 and 8 pushed her into a tie for fifth on day one.
After shooting two rounds in the 60s earlier this week in Waco, Ohma continued her tear with four birdies in her first six holes at Nos. 10, 11, 13 and 15 to card a 4-under 32 on her outward nine. She reached 5-under with a birdie at No. 1 but gave it back with a bogey at No. 3 to record her opening-round 68.
Bridget Boczar finished day one in a tie for 22nd with a 2-under 70 in the opening round. Following an opening birdie at No. 10, she briefly fell over par with back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 14 and 15 but would not stay there long. The junior closed her first nine with three-straight birdies at Nos. 16, 17 and 18. Turning with a 2-under 34, she dropped a shot at No. 1 but added two more birdies at Nos. 7 and 8 before closing with a bogey at No. 9.
BaiMai Seema turned in an even-par 72 on Friday to finish the day tied for 47th. A bogey at No. 12 and a birdie at No. 18 saw her make the turn with an even-par 36. Seema’s second nine was a bit more adventurous with three pars, bogeys at Nos. 4, 5 and 8 and birdies at Nos. 2, 7 and 9.
Ashleen Kaur carded a 2-over 74 to finish the first day in a tie for 64th. The sophomore’s outward nine included a couple of bogeys at Nos. 13 and 15 to the tune of a 2-over 38. She played another steady nine on the inward half with a birdie at No. 8 and a bogey at No. 9.

QUOTABLE:
Head coach Jay Goble on the team’s performance— “Today was a solid day, and it is a lot of fun to see our hard work rewarded. Silje [Ohma] has been very focused on improving, and she is playing some really good golf right now, as is Sera [Hasegawa], who was a ball-striking machine today. It also excites me to see Bridget [Boczar] continue to put her consistency on display. She did fantastic today.”
