WACO, Texas – The Baylor Equestrian program opened the season on Friday with the annual Green and Gold Scrimmage, the Green Team coming away with a 12-6 win at the Willis Equestrian Center.

The Bears got back in the saddle again as the competed against their teammates, recording a Green-led 3-2 score in Fences, Green-led 3-1 score in Flat, a Green-led 6-3 score in Horsemanship and no-score in Reining. Overall it was a Green 6-3 score for Jumping Seat and Green 6-3 in Western.

Starting out the day in Fences, Rose Campbell competed the demo ride on Calvi. Kicking off the action was Caroline Robelen with a 79 on Lennox, eventually bested by Gold Team’s Audrey Turner with an 81. Gold’s Katie Smith had an 82 to beat out Daniela Carvajal’s 73 on Teddy. On Florio, Green’s Caroline Muth scored a point-winning 83 to Juliette Earley’s 80. Grace O’Connell, the MOP of the event, scored an 85 on Donny to Emma Covarrubias’ 80. Rounding out the event was Annie Vorhies scoring a 78.5 on Puzzle over Nicollette Perry’s 75.

In Reining, only five riders competed. Kalena Reynolds scored a 70.5 on Floyd while Britt McIlnay had a 0 on Cowboy. Isabelle Hildebrandt scored a 73 on Bear, and MOP Sadie Peters had a 72.5 on Cherry. To finish the event, Ryan Jensen rode to a 72.5 on Penny.

Back in the covered arena, in Flat, Loretta-Jean Devening had a score of 82 on Petey for the demo. Starting off the action was Gold’s Lauren Stebbins on Grande scoring a 90, which was matched by O’Connell for a tie. Earley, the MOP, scored a 90 for the Gold on Capi to outscore Carly Stasio’s 82. Green’s Vorhies scored an 85 on Cowboy to best Turner’s 83, while Green’s Robelen scored a 70 on Z to best Perry’s 57. Carvajal had a score of 79 on Albert to earn her point against Smith’s 68 for the Gold Team.

For Horsemanship, there were a total of 18 rides. Gold’s Madison Dolan had a 72.5 to win the point over Addisyn Albers’ 69.5. Green’s Kristen McPherson had a 74 for the win on Gracie over Mallory Fricke’s 72.5. On Layla, Gold Team’s Carley Rutledge scored a 76.5 over Gia Pozzi’s 74.5. Anna Thron got a point for Green with a 74.5 to best Natalie Raspberger’s 71. Getting Green’s third point was Natalie Anderson, scoring a 75.5 on Mister over Olive Holm’s 72. Nadalee Vasquez evened the event score with a 76 on Zeke for Gold, with Avery Mortman earning a 75.5. Blaise Runyon put Green ahead again with a 76 on Vegas over Kaydee Bennett’s 75. Winning the MOP was Green’s Alexis Rutledge, scoring a 76 on Bentley to overtake Ava Holman’s 67.5. Rounding out the action on Whiz, Kaitlyn Smith earned a 73.5 for Green’s final point over Taylor Smith’s 70.5.

The Bears will host Tarleton for a scrimmage on Sept. 29 at Willis Equestrian Center, with a start time of 12 p.m.
