Baylor MGOLF Opens the Season With a 10th Place Finish at the Gopher Invitational

INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – Baylor men’s golf finished 10th at the Gopher Invitational on Monday afternoon at Windsong Farm Golf Club.

Zach Heffernan was the top-finishing Bear for the third-straight round, recording a tie for 13th, his career-best finish in a season-opening event. Drew Wrightson also put together a solid week with 3-over 216, good enough to tie for 15th. Nebraska’s Rudy Sautron claimed individual medalist honors with a 5-under 208.

Iowa State won the team title with an 8-over 860. BU's 31-over 883 was seven shots behind ninth-place New Mexico and one shot in front of 11th-place UNC Wilmington.

THE RUNDOWN
Heffernan made a couple of book-end bogeys at Nos. 10 and 18 with a birdie at No. 12 to turn with a 1-over 37. He fought back to even with a birdie at No. 3 but dropped three shots in his final four holes at Nos. 6, 8 and 9.

Wrightson got off to a strong start with a couple of early birdies at Nos. 12 and 14 before his first dropped shot of the day at No. 18. Turning at 1-under, he made bogeys at Nos. 2 and 4 before closing with five-straight pars.

Jonas Appel finished his first tournament as the No. 1 player with a tie 38th. A pair of bogeys on his opening nine were sandwiched around a birdie at No. 12 to make the turn in 37. The junior dropped a shot at No. 1 but scratched it back with a birdie at No. 5. A double-bogey at No. 8 and a birdie at No. 9 put the finishing touches on his season-opening event.

Davis Ovard tied for 69th after a 5-over 76 in the final round. The sophomore played his first nine at 4-over after a triple-bogey at No. 12, and a double-bogey at No. 17. An up-and-down closing nine saw him finish at 1-over with bogeys at Nos. 2, 6 and 7 and birdies at Nos. 3 and 9.

Sam Dossey tied for 69th in his debut in the Baylor lineup with an 8-over 79 on Monday. After opening with three-straight birdies, he played his final 15 holes at 11-over par.


HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Heffernan carded his career-best finish in a season opener with a tie for 13th
  *   Wrightson recorded his best finish in a season-opening event (t-15th)
  *   BU has multiple players finish in the top 15 for the first time since the Aggie Invitational last spring
