GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — Sera Hasegawa paced Baylor women’s golf to a fifth-place finish after day one of the Folds of Honor Collegiate on Monday.

Baylor’s career stroke-average leader shot a 1-over 73, a shot better than Ashleen Kaur’s 2-over 74. The Baylor duo sit tied for 10th and 17th, respectively. Texas’ Lauren Kim captured the first-round individual lead with a 5-under 67.

With a 1-over 289, former Baylor player Giovana Maymon has Arizona in first place after Monday in her first event as the Wildcat's head coach. Baylor's 12-over 300 is seven shots behind fourth-place Florida State and nine shots behind third-place Texas.
THE RUNDOWN
Hasegawa suffered a quick bogey on her opening hole of the Day at No. 10 but rebounded immediately with a birdie at No. 11. A bogey at No. 17 cost her another shot as she made the turn with a 1-over 37. A birdie-bogey start to her second nine kept her at 1-over, where she would finish after a birdie-bogey exchange at Nos. 8 and 9.

Kaur started 3-over through her first five holes but picked up a shot with a birdie at No. 16 to make the turn at 2-over. The sophomore fought back to 1-over with a birdie at No. 2 before falling back to plus-four with a double-bogey at No. 3. A birdie at No. 4 kickstarted a 1-under finish on her final six holes.

BaiMai Seema carded a tie for 24th in the first event of her senior season on the heels of a 3-over 75. An up-and-down first nine saw her make birdies at Nos. 10 and 14 around a bogey at No. 11 and a double-bogey at No. 16 to turn with a 1-over 37. She played a clean inward half aside from a couple of stray bogeys at Nos. 3 and 8.

YoonJeong Huh finished her day with a 6-over 78 and tied for 41st. Playing her first six holes at even par, Huh made double-bogeys at Nos. 16 and 18 for a 4-over 40 on her opening nine. She settled in with four pars on the front side before a bogey at No. 5 and a double at No. 8. The sophomore finished strong, though, with a birdie on her final hole of the day at No. 9.

Bridget Boczar made her Baylor debut with a 7-over 79 in the first round. Spending most of her day near the top of the leaderboard, the Oakland transfer bounced back from an opening bogey at No. 10 with two birdies at Nos. 11 and 16. Sitting at 1-under through 11 holes, Boczar played her final seven at 8-over.

  *   Hasegawa shot her lowest score to open a season since carding a 2-under 68 at the Schooner Fall Classic in 2022

Head coach Jay Goble on the team’s performance— “I think today was about what I expected for the first round of the year. I saw some good things and some not-so-good things, but this is a tough golf course we played in some tough conditions. I believe we will build off of our experiences today and get ready for the rest of the week.”
