INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – Baylor men’s golf shot a 21-over 589 to finish day one in 11th place at the Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Club on Sunday.

Zach Heffernan continued his strong play from a season ago with a 1-under 141, leading the Bear contingent in a tie for seventh through two rounds. He trails Noah Kent of Iowa by two shots heading into Monday's final round.

Iowa leads the team standings through 36 holes with a 3-over 571, one shot ahead of host Minnesota.

THE RUNDOWN
Round One
After bogeys on four of his first six holes, Heffernan finished the front nine with three-straight birdies to card a 1-over 36 on his outward nine. The senior notched six-straight pars and closed with two birdies in his final three holes to card his first red-figure round of the season with a 1-under 70.

Drew Wrightson got off to a hot start in his first competitive tournament in over a year with three birdies on the front nine but suffered a double-bogey at No. 8 to go out in 34. Three bogeys on his homeward half at Nos. 11, 16 and 18 dropped him back over par for the round.

In his career-first round at the No. 1 position, Jonas Appel shot a 3-over 74. The junior recorded his first birdie of the day at No. 9 on the heels of a bogey at No. 4 and a double bogey at No. 7. After a 2-over front nine, he made bogeys at Nos. 11 and 12, dropping him back to 4-over, before playing his final four holes at 1-under, highlighted by birdies at Nos. 15 and 18.

Sam Dossey shot a 4-over 76 in his first round as a member of the lineup. An up-and-down front nine saw the junior shoot a 2-over 37 before closing with bogeys at Nos. 10, 12 and 14 for a 5-over 76.

Davis Ovard recorded a 10-over 81 in the first round. Ovard went out with a 6-over 41, improving by two shots on his second nine with a 4-over 40.

Round Two
Heffernan made a double-bogey on his first hole of the second round but battled back to even by the end of the front nine with a pair of birdies. He finished with an even-par back-nine, rebounding from a bogey at No. 15 with a birdie at No. 17.

In round two, Wrightson capped his strong return to the lineup with an even-par 71 to move into a tie for 17th. Going out in 35, Wrightson recorded a birdie at No. 3 before notching a bogey at No. 5. On the second nine, he dropped over par with a bogey at No. 13 but closed strong with a birdie at No. 18.

Appel wrapped day one in a tie for 51st after a 6-over 77 in the second round. Battling his way to a 1-over 35 on the front side, Appel ran into trouble on the back nine with a 5-over 41 to finish the day.

Dossey enters the final round in a tie for 67th on the heels of an 8-over 79 on Sunday afternoon. After making six bogeys on the front nine, Dossey settled in to play his homeward half at just 2-over.

Ovard finished the day tied for 74th with a second-round 77. After making an early birdie, the sophomore dropped a couple of shots at Nos. 4 and 8 to turn with a 1-over 36. He added a bogey at No. 15, but dropped four shots on the final hole of the day with a quadruple-bogey.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Heffernan has now shot at least one round at par or better in six-straight events, dating back to the All-American Individual last season
  *   Heffernan was just one of 11 players to shoot in red figures in the first round.

STAT OF THE DAY
469 — Utilizing a redshirt last season, Drew Wrightson went 469 days between starts for the Bears and gave them a boost in his return with a 2-over 144.
