HOCKLEY, Texas – Baylor men's golf will tee it up in the Big 12 Match Play Championship, beginning Monday at the Clubs at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas.

Two-time winners of this event, BU enters the 2024 edition as the No. 13 seed in a pool with No. 4 Texas Tech, No. 5 Colorado and No. 12 TCU. The first three matches for Baylor will be against the other teams from its pool. At the conclusion of pool play, the top-ranked teams from each pool will face off in Tuesday afternoon’s semifinals, with the championship match taking place Wednesday morning.

No stranger to success in Hockley, head coach Mike McGraw looks forward to this event every year, and this season is no exception.

“We are very excited to get back to Houston Oaks for the Big 12 Match Play,” he said. “We’ve obviously had a lot of success here in the past, but it’s a great opportunity for our guys to play some competitive golf across five matches on a really neat golf course.”

Zach Heffernan will return to Houston Oaks after he went a perfect 5-0 last season in Hockley, just the fifth player in the event’s history to win all five matches. The senior enters the week 7-7-1 in his 15 previous matches.

Jonas Appel is set to make his second appearance at the Big 12 Match Play, going 0-4-1 in his debut in 2022. The junior is off to a steady start this season, leading the team with 72 pars through two events.

Drew Wrightson will also make his second appearance in the event after coming in as a sub in 2022. Losing his debut match that season off the bench, the redshirt junior reeled off back-to-back wins to improve his match-play record to 2-1-0.

Davis Ovard will get the nod in the lineup after a 2-3 showing in the match play last season as a freshman. Following 1-up losses to UCF's Nicholas Estrada and Iowa State's Owen Sawyer, Ovard picked up wins in his next two matches to help the Bears reach the finals against Texas before ultimately finishing second.

Vincent Stjernfeld will make his second start in the lineup after he finished tied for 65th in his debut at the Fighting Illini Invitational.

Fellow freshman Jackson Hymer will make the trip as the alternate.

Monday’s morning session will begin with the Bears and Red Raiders, followed by a showdown with Colorado in the afternoon session.
