CINCINNATI, Ohio – The 16th-ranked Baylor volleyball squad came out on top against Cincinnati on Wednesday afternoon, 3-2.

The Bears (21-7, 13-4) defeated the Bearcats (14-14, 5-12) though it took all five sets. BU came out slow and dropped set one, 25-18, but redeemed themselves with a set two win, 25-16. The third set was won by Baylor, 25-23, before Cincinnati took the fourth at 25-17. The Bears took the final set dominantly, 15-6.

Leading for the Bears were Elise McGhee with 15 kills, Lauren Briseño with 23 digs, Jackie Barrett Frazier with 40 assists and Victoria Davis with six blocks.

McGhee and Kendal Murphy each had a double-double, while Harley Kreck had her fifth match with double-digit assists.

THE RUNDOWN
Set 1
The Bearcats got the first two points on BU errors, but Victoria Davis quickly changed the tone with a kill. The Bears got the block at 4-2 with Alicia Andrew and Jackie Barrett Frazier denying it, Andrew getting a kill at 5-3. Trying to cut the lead were Allie Sczech, Davis and Kendal Murphy, getting it to one at 7-6. UC kept it moving on their end and got up by two again, Sczech stepping in the way. With kills from Murphy and Davis, the Bears got within one, and it was Davis and Barrett Frazier that tied it with a block. The Bearcats went on a run and got up by three, Elise McGhee being the one to put a stop to it, 13-11. A slew of serving errors came from both sides, four to be exact, but Andrew got an ace to be within two, 17-15. Murphy kept that spread until the Bearcats went on a run, going up 21-17, BU calling timeout. Nothing was working for the Bears, and it became Cincinnati set point. An attack error from UC staved it off a point, but a kill ended it, 25-18.

Set 2
The second frame started much better for the Bears as Davis and Murphy got the block, and Andrew served up an ace next. A 3-1 lead was taken thanks to a Murphy kill, then Davis at 4-2. After two attack errors from the Bearcats, they called a timeout, down 7-2. Davis was on a roll and got the next Baylor kill out of the timeout, then Andrew surprised UC at 9-4 with a kill. McGhee swung away and got the 10th point of the set, up buy three on the Bearcats. Andrew served her third ace of the set for BU to be up 12-7, but UC matched it and had a kill and block to catch up quickly. Davis kept at it and got a kill, up 13-10 then 14-11. The Bears put a stop to it and scored four-straight thanks to Davis’ kill, one from McGhee, as well as a Murphy ace and a block from Davis and McGhee; the Bearcats calling timeout at 17-11. The Bears kept them scrambling, McGhee getting BU to the 20th point with two kills before UC delivered a block. Murphy had a kill, then Andrew, then Sczech and Davis helped propel the Bears to the end of the set, getting a block at 23-15. Davis got set point with a kill, and it was Murphy who ended it in BU’s favor, 25-16.

Set 3
Andrew started the Bears off with a kill but UC took the next three points. Sczech stopped it with a kill and then Davis kept BU in it early, down 4-3. Cincinnati went on a run, up 7-4 with an ace. McGhee and Sczech recorded kills, keeping it within one. McGhee scored again, but UC went on another three-point run, the Bears calling time at 11-7. Andrew got the kill out of it, Cincy recorded two more, then Sczech delivered a blow before a block from Davis and Murphy at 13-10. Cutting the lead were Davis and McGhee, then Andrew made it a two-point set with a joust, 15-13. An ace from Lauren Briseño brought BU within one, Cincy calling timeout. Whittling it away, McGhee swung for the moon and then Sczech. McGhee got a solo block and Barrett Frazier served two aces in a row, now up 19-17, prompting a Bearcat timeout. Out of it came two points for UC, but McGhee redeemed one for herself. Andrew had them not knowing what hit them with a kill, then McGhee connected again after a block, 22-21. Cincy tied it, but then Grace Carroll and Davis got the block. It was Carroll’s two kills that finished the set for Baylor, 25-23.

Set 4
Murphy and Davis began the fourth frame with kills and tooled blocks; Davis having her first double-digit kill match of the season. Davis tied it at 4-4 but Cincinnati went on a run, going up by two before BU challenged a play successfully, McGhee being credited with the kill, now down just one point at 6-5. Carroll hit through the block to tie it at six-all then seven-all. Murphy got a kill to put the Bears back up by one, but then Cincy started to get its footing. McGhee kept it within one with a kill, down 11-10, but then damage was done. UC went on a three-point run into the media timeout, up 15-11. The Bearcats got a block out of it but then Barrett Frazier threw them for a loop with a setter dump. She had another, this time a backset, still down 18-13. Baylor called timeout at 19-13. Murphy got her 10th kill of the afternoon but Cincy was on a roll. McGhee and Murphy continued to try and lessen the damage, but UC got set point at 24-16. Baylor saw an attack error to hold them off, but a service error ended the set, 25-17.

Set 5
Barrett Frazier started Baylor on the right foot for the fifth frame, winning the joust for the first point and then serving an ace. Cincy followed it with a kill and an ace of their own, before Barrett Frazier dumped it, 4-2. The Bearcats challenged a play unsuccessfully challenged a play, then Sczech laid a kill down for the 5-3 lead. A ball dropped to the floor from Cincinnati and called timeout, 7-4. The teams switched sides at 8-5, Davis getting the kill. Barrett Frazier got another dump and the momentum kept rolling with a kill and block from Carroll, UC calling time, 11-6. On a run, a long rally ensued, with Andrew ultimately getting the kill, though Cincy challenged unsuccessfully. Three-straight attack errors from Cincinnati ended the match in Baylor’s favor, 15-6. The Bears finished on a 7-0 run.
