THE RUNDOWN
Set 1
The Bears got consecutive kills from Ava Grace Haggard to start their scoring. Elise McGhee got in on the action, and then Jennifer Bolden, BU up 5-3 on the Cougars. Kendal Murphy joined the scoresheet as well, but Houston started to climb early in the set. Tied at 8-all, Manuela Bibinbe got herself a kill and Haggard and Jackie Barrett Frazier followed it with a block to hush the comeback from UH, though they continued to work to stay close. McGhee, Bolden and Murphy kept swinging and took the Bears to be up 17-12. Bibinbe got another two kills before she recorded a solo block for Baylor’s 20th point, up 20-14. Lauren Briseño served an ace for set point, 24-19, and an attack error on the Coogs finished the set, 25-19.
Set 2
Houston came out swinging for the second frame and went up 3-0 on the Bears quickly. Baylor didn’t get its first kill of the match until 5-4, down one. Through 8-6, that kill from McGhee was still the lone one from BU. The Bears down by five, McGuyre called timeout at 11-6. Out of it, UH continued its four-point run but was stopped by a service error at 12-7. The Bears tried to stop the bleeding but errors kept finding them. Houston recorded three more points, and BU called another pause, 15-7. McGhee finally put another kill on BU’s sheet at 16-8, and that seemed to affect the green and gold, Murphy getting the next kill. Alicia Andrew and Allie Sczech got the block at 16-10 then repeated at 17-11. Barrett Frazier got the setter dump and Bibinbe met McGhee for a block at 19-5. Gaining ground, Houston called timeout. Bibinbe, McGhee and Andrew got kills to keep the ball rolling, down 22-18. Houston took it to set point and capitalized, taking it 25-18.
Set 3
The Bears started with the kill, then Barrett Frazier had the setter dump. Sczech came up behind with the kill, now 3-1. McGhee kept going with a kill at 4-3, then 6-4. Sczech and Victoria Davis continued to find the floor, then Murphy and McGhee. Barrett Frazier served an ace at 14-8 and McGhee kept the kills coming. Davis and Murphy teamed up for the block at 18-12 before both teams recorded some errors. After another attack error from UH, Houston called timeout, 21-14. Errors continued, but a kill from Andrew took BU to set point. It was Murphy who ended the set with a kill, tooling the block. The set ended at 25-16 for Baylor to go up 2-1 in the match.
Set 4
Faith Lynch began the set with an ace, setting the Bears up for a five-point run. McGhee contributed two points on the kill before Davis and Barrett Frazier got the block. Houston came back to get two and kept their presence known. Barrett Frazier had the joust won at 7-4, then Sczech joined the box score for the fourth set with a kill. UH was a step or two behind, but Sczech and Andrew got the block at 11-8. Davis and Murphy got kills and the Coogs caught up, tying it at 13-all. BU tied it again at 14-all with a Murphy kill. The teams traded points and tensions grew. Houston served an ace to go up by one and McGuyre called timeout, out of it, UH had a second ace but Baylor questioned the ball placement, out of challenges. Down by two, 21-19, McGhee got the kill. Two back-to-back solo blocks came for Houston before Murphy recorded her next kill. A block came for Houston to make it set point, and a Houston kill ended the set with a win, 25-21.
Set 5
The deciding set started on a 3-0 run with Davis, McGhee and Murphy getting kills, respectively. McGhee kept swinging, helping BU go up 5-2. Briseño served an ace to go up 8-2 and swap sides. The Bears got kills from McGhee and Sczech but Houston was pushing. Errors from Baylor and kills from UH brought them to 10-6. McGhee got one to connect but after two-straight kills from the Coogs, timeout was called by BU, 11-8. Sczech got a decisive kill and then another after a UH kill, going up 13-9. Murphy got match point but Houston called timeout. There was a BU service error but Murphy redeemed the Bears to get match point, ending it at 14-10.
