WACO, Texas – Baylor men’s golf senior Johnny Keefer is ranked 17th in the preseason Velocity Global PGA Tour University rankings, announced on Wednesday morning.
Since 2020, PGA TOUR University has identified the best seniors in college golf and elevated their path to the PGA TOUR. The rankings are based on the last two years of each player’s collegiate career. The top-15 finishers in PGA TOUR University earn access to the Korn Ferry Tour, PGA TOUR Canada or PGA TOUR Latinoamérica.
Keefer is the first player since Cooper Dossey in 2020 to be featured in the preseason top-25, and he is one of six Big 12 representatives in the initial rankings.
2021-22 was a banner year for the San Antonio, Texas, native, as he took home All-America honors, was selected to the All-Big 12 Team, and was named the Big 12 Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Keefer is the second player in program history to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year and All-Big 12 in the same season.
Playing out of the No. 1 spot for every tournament last season, Keefer recorded a team-leading stroke average of 71.34 across 29 stroke-play rounds, ranking as the seventh-best in program history. He also led the team in top-5s (2), top-10s (5), top-25s (9) and rounds at par or better (18) while accounting for 33% of the team's par-or-better rounds.
The All-American tied a school record with a final-round 63 at the Cabo Collegiate en route to his best finish of the season (T3).
Additionally, he led the team in par-3 scoring (3.05), par-4 scoring (4.09), and par-5 scoring (4.63). He became the first BU player to compete in an NCAA postseason event as an individual since 2009, tying for 11th at the Norman Regional at Jimmie Austin Golf Club. In the process, Keefer became the fifth player to shoot two sub-70 rounds in the same NCAA postseason.
Earlier this week, the senior qualified for the United States Amateur by winning the USGA qualifier at Champions Golf Club in Houston. The 2022 US Amateur will take place Aug. 15-21 at The Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey.
