WACO, Texas – Baylor senior guard James Akinjo was named to the Sporting News Midseason All-America First Team, the publication announced Thursday.
Akinjo is one of fifteen players named to the three teams and is the only Big 12 player to make the first team. Kansas’ Ochai Agbaji, who made the second team, is the only other Big 12 player listed.
A transfer from Arizona, Akinjo leads the Big 12 with 5.7 assists per game. He also ranks third in steals per game (2.06), fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.83), seventh in field goal percentage (.434) and eighth in points per game (13.9). He was also named to the Wooden Award Top-25 Midseason watch list earlier this month.
An Oakland, Calif., native, Akinjo has earned Big 12 Player of the Week (Jan. 3) and Big 12 Newcomer of the Week (Jan. 10) honors this season. He missed Tuesday’s win at West Virginia while recovering from injury, but has scored 14+ points in eight of his last nine games played and has started 17 of 18 games for the No. 5-ranked Bears.
BU will return to action on Saturday, with a trip to Norman to close out its season series with Oklahoma at 2 p.m. CT on ESPN+. The Bears defeated the Sooners, 84-74, in Waco on Jan. 4, a game where Akinjo scored 27 points and dished out five assists.
