HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – On a difficult day for scoring, Baylor women’s golf stayed patient and found themselves leading the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate after round one at Long Cove Club.

One of the first teams off on Monday morning, the Bears battled the wind and tough scoring conditions for a 3-over 287 to lead Texas by two shots after 18 holes.

Senior Gurleen Kaur was near the top of the leaderboard for a majority of the day, thanks to birdies at Nos. 5 and 6. She added one more birdie at the par-4 11th hole before hitting one of the more difficult stretches on the course, Monday. Kaur made bogeys at Nos. 12 and 15 but closed the round with three-straight pars to get into the clubhouse with a 1-under 70 and a tie for seventh.

Antonia Matte also played well in her debut at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate with a 1-over 72. The Freshman from Chile birdied three of her first five holes to get to quickly get to the top of the leaderboard. After making the turn at even-par, Matte got back into red figures with a birdie at the par-4 12th. From there, Matte made a couple of bogeys but got in the clubhouse in a tie for 12th.

Sophomore Britta Snyder also carded a 1-over 72 to pull into a tie for 12th. She made an opening-hole bogey but got a stroke back with a birdie at the par-4 fifth. She followed another bogey at No. 10 with a birdie at No. 11. She then played her final eight holes at 1-over.

Rosie Belsham finished round one in a tie for 22nd after a 2-over 73 to record BU’s final counting score. With a pair of bogeys on the front-nine, Belsham closed the inward half with a birdie at the par-4 ninth. On the back-nine, she bounced back from bogeys at 12 and 14 with a birdie at the par-5 15th.

Freshman Baimai Seema made her fourth start of the season and shot a 6-over 77 on Monday, highlighted by birdies on two of her final three holes on the front nine. Seema followed four bogeys in a five-hole stretch with five-straight pars to end her day.

HIGHLIGHTS

•      Gurleen Kaur recorded her eighth-straight round of par or better.

•      Kaur was 1-under on the par-4’s Monday, tied for second-best among individuals.

•      BU played the par-4’s at an average of 4.13, which was second to only LSU in the opening round.

•      The Bears’ 13 birdies were the second-most in the field on Monday.

We know it's a difficult golf course that you have to stay patient on, and they did a great job of managing their games and managing their expectations and really going out there and hitting one shot at a time. It’s an old golf cliche, but that's what you have to do on this golf course.”

BU will tee off in the late window on Tuesday led off by Baimai Seema at 10:20 a.m. CT.
