WACO, Texas– Baylor men's golf signed a talented trio to National Letters of Intent in the 2022 signing class, head coach Mike McGraw<https://baylorbears.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1586> announced on Wednesday.
The Bears signed Sam Dossey from Austin, Texas, who will join the team for the spring of 2022. Ben Brogdon from Little Rock, Ark., and Jonas Appel from Encinitas, Calif. will join the team in the fall of 2022.
“I am excited about this recruiting class,” McGraw said. “All three are quality players, but their character is what I like most about them. Ben, Sam and Jonas will all be great additions to the program.”
Dossey is a familiar name to the BU golf program, Sam will be the third Dossey brother for play for McGraw, joining his brother, Luke, on the current team. Their older brother, Cooper, was one of the most decorated players in program history from 2017-2021.
Sam brings his own impressive resume to the Bears’ roster as the 2021 Texas Legends Junior Tour Player of the Year. Dossey recorded five top-5’s in eight starts, highlighted by wins at The George Hannon Junior Invitational and The North Texas Classic, while also winning the 2020 Collegiate Preview. He ranks 37th nationally (9th in Texas) in the Golfweek Boy Junior Rankings for the class of 2022.
Appel signs with Baylor as the 14th-ranked player in the Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings and the seventh-ranked junior in the class of 2022. He is coming off an impressive 2021 season where he made the round of 32 at the United States Golf Association Junior Amateur, finished fifth at the IMG World Championship and went 2-1-1 as a member of the Wyndham Cup West Team.
Named a Rolex Junior All American Honorable Mention, Appel won the 2020 Under Armour Jordan Spieth Championship, punctuated by a final-round 65 to win the event by three shots. Appel earned Rolex Junior All America First team honors in 2019-2020 and earned a spot on the 2019 AJGA Junior All-Star Team.
Brogdon is a two-time all-state and all-conference selection in Arkansas, winning medalist honors at the 5A Central Conference Tournament in 2021. Coming off an injury in 2020, he notched a pair of top-10 finishes in 2021, including a 4th-place finish at the Bluebonnet Championship, in Brownwood, Texas, on the Texas Legends Junior Tour.
He followed that up with an eighth-place finish at the American Junior Golf Association’s Stewart Cink Championship at Vestavia Country Club in Birmingham, Ala. Prior to his injury, Brogdon climbed to 24th in the Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings on the strength of three top-10 finishes in 2019.
The Bears finished their fall with two-straight wins at the Big 12 Match Play Championship and will return to action on February 14, 2022 at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas, at Laredo Country Club.
