THE RUNDOWN
ORLANDO, Fla. – Baylor men’s tennis kept up its winning way on Tuesday in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship Rounds of 16 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.

No. 21 Adrian Boitan (singles) and No. 9 Constantin Frantzen/Sven Lah (doubles) each survived and advanced to the tournament’s quarterfinals.

First, Boitan held on against No. 90 August Holmgren of San Diego in what was his third three-set match of the singles draw, outlasting his opponent 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. Boitan has now played six matches in six consecutive days without a loss. Including unfinished matches, the third-year sophomore is currently riding a 12-match unbeaten streak.

The Constanta, Romania, native becomes the fifth Bear all-time to reach the singles quarterfinals and first since Denes Lukacs in 2008. He is one of three unseeded players remaining in the singles draw, alongside five of the top-eight seeds in the Elite 8.

In the nightcap, Frantzen and Lah stormed back from an early hole to defeat Oklahoma State’s No. 27 Emile Hudd/Matej Vocel 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8). They are the sixth Bears pairing to reach the quarters in doubles, most recently achieved by Lah and his former partner Jimmy Bendeck in 2019.

This is just the second time in program history that the Bears are have representatives in the singles and doubles quarterfinals in the same year (2003).

Baylor is one of two teams with remaining participants in both the singles and doubles tournaments, along with North Carolina. Coincidentally, the Bears and Tar Heels will match up against each other in both of Wednesday’s contests. Twelve other schools are represented in the quarterfinals.

WHAT’S NEXT
No. 21 Boitan will take on 10-time All-American and No. 35-ranked William Blumberg (UNC) at 11 a.m. CT in the quarterfinals. Blumberg is the only 10-time All-American in collegiate tennis history.

No. 9 Frantzen/Lah will also square off against Blumberg and his fellow Tar Heel doubles partner Brian Cernoch at 5 p.m. CT. The UNC duo is ranked the No. 3 team in the nation.
