Baylor MT Coaching Pair Earns ITA Texas Region Awards
Woodson named Wilson Coach of the Year, van der Merwe named Assistant of the Year

WACO, Texas – The Baylor Men’s Tennis coaching duo of head coach Michael Woodson and assistant coach Izak van der Merwe were honored by the ITA as Texas Region winners, Monday. Woodson was named the Texas Region’s ITA Wilson Coach of the Year while van der Merwe was the ITA Assistant Coach of the Year.

Both men were among the 12 national finalists for their respective category and will find out if they are the national winner, June 21.

Woodson was named the interim head coach prior to the 2020-21 season, was promoted to head coach in May, and proceeded to the lead the Bears to a school-record 34 victories and an NCAA title match appearance, May 22.

van der Merwe is in his third season with the Baylor program and was promoted to assistant coach prior to the 2020-21 season. He helped guide the Bears to regular-season and tournament championships in the Big 12 this season, in addition to the deep run at the NCAA Tournament.

The Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year honors annually the coach who has exhibited outstanding leadership in ways that contribute to on and off-court team performance. The ITA Assistant Coach of the Year honors the assistant coach who has exhibited outstanding leadership in ways that contribute to on and off-court team performance.
