WACO, Texas – Jessica Hinojosa is a national finalist for the ITA’s Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award after earning the same award for the Texas Region, Monday. The outgoing Baylor senior will find out with 11 other finalists, June 21 if they are the national winner.

Hinojosa played five seasons for the Baylor Bears where she participated in three NCAA Tournaments. She compiled an 83-54 singles records in her five seasons and was Baylor’s active career leader when she left.

Head Coach Joey Scrivano said, however, that Hinojosa’s impact on the program was more than just wins and losses.

“I’m so proud of Jessica. The Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award is one of the most prestigious honors in our sport,” he said. “Jessica’s accomplishments on the court and in the classroom are outstanding, but the way she competes with integrity and treats her fellow competitors, teammates and coaches is even more impressive. I believe that Jessica will continue to make a difference beyond the tennis court and be amazing ambassador for Baylor, our women’s tennis program and the sport as a whole.”

The ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding student-athletes in all five divisions (NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO) at the regional and national level. This prestigious award, which dates back to 1982, is presented to the men’s and women’s national student-athletes who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.

Nominees for the award were asked to write a letter to the selection committee, and Hinojosa had this to say about her Ashe and her time at Baylor:

“Although I never had the opportunity to see Arthur Ashe play, I am well aware of his amazing accomplishments on and off the court. His remarkable humanitarian efforts and commitment to eliminate racism and poverty have left an impact on all of us.

“Throughout my five years at Baylor playing college tennis, I have set a high standard for myself by setting an example with daily high-character habits and consistently holding myself and my teammates accountable. I consider respect for others an important quality, and I seek opportunities to empower others to succeed. That is one of the main reasons I had the best five years at Baylor, a place that taught me to always put others first.”

Hinojosa was an active participant in Baylor’s Cub Tennis program that teaches basic tennis skills to the youth of the Waco community, and she was a member of SAAC.
