Baylor Women’s Golf Leads After First Day in Austin

THE RUNDOWN
AUSTIN, Texas – Baylor women’s golf has a four-shot lead after recording a two-round total of 8-under-par 568 on Saturday at the Betsy Rawls Invitational. The Bears shot 1-over 289 in the morning and 9-under 279 in the afternoon.



Baylor (-8) leads Texas (-4), Iowa State (+3), TCU (+7), Oklahoma (+10), North Texas (+20), Kansas (+20) and Texas Tech (+23). Oklahoma State entered four individuals, but is not competing as a team, and Kansas State is the only other Big 12 program not competing at the tournament.



Gurleen Kaur tied a school-record with a 7-under 65 in the second round after shooting even-par 72 in the morning. She leads the 51-player field by one stroke and is looking to win consecutive tournaments after tying for first place at the season-opening Schooner Fall Classic.



Five Bears are among the top-15 individually. Diane Baillieux, one of three Bears competing as an individual, is tied for seventh place at 3-under 141 following rounds of 1-over 73 and 4-under 68. Elodie Chapelet is tied for 10th place at 1-under 143 with rounds of 2-over 74 and 3-under 69. Freshman Nina Lang, who is competing as an individual in her first collegiate tournament, is also tied for 10th at 1-under 143 following rounds of even-par 72 and 1-under 71.



Freshman Britta Snyder is tied for 13th place at even-par after a 1-over 73 in the first round and 1-under 71 in the afternoon. Redshirt freshman Hannah Karg is tied for 25th place at 4-over 148, and she posted a team-best 2-under 70 in the first round. Freshman Rosie Belsham shot 2-over 74 in both rounds and is also tied for 25th place at 4-over. Redshirt freshman Anika Veintemilla is the final Bear competing individually, and she’s tied for 40th place at 12-over 156.


HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor’s second-round score of 279 was the sixth-best in program history on a par-72 course and tied for the 10th-best round overall.
  *   Baylor leads the eight-team field in par-4 scoring at 2-over 4.02, ranks second in par-5 scoring at 5-under 4.88 and tied for second in par-3 scoring at 3-over 3.08.
  *   Baylor made the only three eagles during Saturday’s two rounds, with two from Kaur and one from Chapelet.
  *   BU is tied for second in the field with 115 pars and ranks third with 32 birdies.
  *   Kaur ranks second in the field in par-5 scoring at 5-under 4.38, tied for second in par-4 scoring at 2-under 3.90 and tied for eighth in par-3 scoring at even-par 3.00.
  *   Chapelet is tied for second in par-4 scoring at 2-under 3.90 and tied for eighth in par-3 scoring at even-par 3.00.
  *   Baillieux is tied for fifth in par-5 scoring at 3-under 4.63 and tied for eighth in par-4 scoring at 1-under 3.95.
  *   Snyder and Lang are tied for eighth in par-3 scoring at even-par 3.00 and tied for 10th in par-5 scoring at 2-under 4.75.
  *   Baillieux and Chapelet are tied for the tournament lead with 29 pars across 36 holes, while Lang ranks fifth with 27 pars and Belsham is tied for ninth with 25 pars.
  *   Snyder ranks second in the field with 11 birdies, while Kaur and Karg are tied for eighth with seven birdies apiece.
  *   Snyder made seven birdies in a 10-hole span in the second round.


STAT OF THE DAY
5 – Baylor has been atop the leaderboard after all five rounds played this season. The Bears led wire-to-wire through all three rounds at the Schooner Fall Classic, had a two-stroke lead after Saturday’s first round at the Betsy Rawls Invitational and now lead by four strokes after two rounds in Austin.
