Baylor Track & Field: Day, Tidwell Win in Final Meets Before Big 12s

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ryan Day and Tuesdi Tidwell came away with victories to highlight the final day for Baylor track & field Saturday at both the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., and the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.

“Overall, it was a mixed day,” head coach Todd Harbour said. “We had some good things happen. We just have to get everybody well, reload and get ready for the Big 12 meet in two weeks.”

Day won in impressive fashion in the men’s 3,000 meters at the Tyson Invitational, kicking it into high gear and finishing a full two seconds ahead of second place. The sophomore from Waco recorded a personal-best time of 8:21.65, which falls just outside the top-10 on Baylor’s all-time indoor performers list.

“That was a nice job by Ryan in the 3K,” Harbour said. “It was a nice PB. Celia (Holmes) ran well in the 3K, too.”

In the women’s 3,000 meters in Fayetteville, Holmes took second place with a personal best of her own (9:51.50).

Tuesdi Tidwell took home the victory in the women’s pole vault at the Iowa State Classic, winning a tie-breaking jump-off with a mark of 14-0 ½ (4.28m). The junior from Early, Texas, was tied at 13-8 ½ (4.18m) before ultimately coming away with the win.

Cole Hardan had a strong day in Ames, moving into sixth on Baylor's all-time indoor shot put performers list with a personal-best throw of 55-2 ¼ (16.82m) to take third.

“That was a nice job by Cole,” Harbour said. “He’s been battling some illnesses. It’s that time of the season.”

In the men’s 4x400-meter relay in Fayetteville, the Baylor group of Maxwell Willis, Matthew Moorer, Jayson Baldridge and Howard Fields III placed fourth with a time of 3:07.72.

“The men’s 4x4 was running pretty well,” Harbour said. “Jayson cramped up a little bit, but we had a good time going.”

It’s now championship season as the Bears prepare for the 2020 Big 12 Indoor Championship, which will take place Feb. 28-29 at the Lied Recreation-Athletic Facility on the campus of Iowa State University.
