Dear All  , 

just a note to say that a Norwegian poster in the Film Dope forum  thread regarding Lesley Nunnerly,  mentions that my father's autobiography This autobiography was only published in Norway, and as far as I am aware, there was no English language version . We do have a copy of this book,  and I did try and translate certain chapters ( mainly to do with his war service and childhood  ) back into English using Google Translate  with a certain amount of success, though some of it becomes quite surreal when it inserts completely the wrong words  !!

Yes, you are correct, Christine. Penelope Mortimer (wife of writer John Mortimer) was indeed the novelist who penned The Pumpkin Eater. She also wrote the screenplay for a brilliant, if little known, film from 1988 called A Summer Story. By all means, see A Summer Story if you have the opportunity. Penelope Mortimer based her screenplay on The Apple Tree, a short story by John Galsworthy.
 
Another connection . . .
The wonderful John Savident, who played Sefton's solicitor, George Askew, in A Family at War, appears as a bank clerk in A Summer Story. It is a small but amusing part that proves to be pivotal to the plot.
 
Yet another connection . . .
Yesterday I wrote about "The War Office Regrets" and praised Patrick Troughton's gripping performance. I might also mention that James Beck appears in that episode as NAAFI deliveryman Bob O'Connell, who is having a "tea party" (David Ashton's words) with Sheila when David returns home unannounced. Beck, of course, was spiv Joe Walker on Dad's Army until his premature death at the age of 44. "The War Office Regrets" was taped while he was at the height of his fame as a cast member of Dad's Army. I'm not sure how Beck was chosen for the role of O'Connell, but he does an excellent job in this dramatic role.

Lesley was in a film called The Pumpkin Eater, based on a novel by Penelope Mortimer, I believe.

I can't say I'm familiar with Paul of Tarsus but know Patrick played Robin Hood in a mid '50s BBC production (not to be confused with the ITC series starring Richard Greene). I guess they no longer exist in the archive but will be doing some research.

Many of his Dr Who stories suffered the fate of the bulk VT erasing machine sadly. In my view it was Troughton who made Dr Who the success it is /was.

One story I especially hoped would be recovered was "The Enemy of the World" where Patrick played two parts, Doctor Who and the dictator Salamander. Until a few years ago only Episode 3 (of 6) survived.

I was absolutely elated to hear the missing five episodes were found in the Nigerian archive and now issued complete and unedited on a BBC DVD.

This 1967 story also boasts a fine performance from Colin Douglas!

As for Lesley Nunnerly I can't think of anything else she appeared in but again I'll be doing some research and will get back to you on this.

These two wonderful actors (I suspect Dr. Who was a stopover for actors who needed a fast buck, er, bob) did a series in 1960 called Paul of Tarsus, starring Dr. Who, erm, Patrick Troughton. Has anyone seen it? I know much of British TV was wiped out for available film or videotape. Can anyone recommend something that Lesley Nunnerly has done; her acting skills are incredible, even if she curtailed them for whatever reason.
