Hi all,

I've just viewed the first episode of the drama "GBH" from 1991. I remember it well from its first transmission.

It was wonderful to see Colin Douglas in what was sadly his last role before he passed away.

He's as brilliant as ever.

Viewers with access to All Four/Channel 4's catch up service can find it under the Drama category.

There's "A Very British Coup" with the excellent Ray McAnally in one of his last roles too (1988).

Well worth a look if you have access to All 4.

Thank you! I’ve studied linguistics, but anything that will “improve my ear” is welcome. Maybe if I moved over there?...

Michael Goodliffe is outstanding (maybe the last major role before he took his own life?) as is Mona Bruce. These people just BECAME their characters. Like Patrick Troughton as Harry Porter. I’m only up to Episode 3 so I expect other pleasures await...

The accent thing reminded me of a book by Simon Elmes called Talking For Britain. It takes you through the various parts of the country, examining the dialects. I don’t know though if it would help when you’re listening to something, but it does explain dialect words and expressions.

Absolutely recommended! Again, some of the most sterling acting you will NEVER see again, and John Finch’s tough-as-nails dialogue.



Production values are perfect. American television was so bereft of ideas (then and now) that we began taking over such British series as Til Death Do Us Part and Steptoe and Son. We were already importing some of the best series directly on our Masterpiece Theater (albeit had a French Baroque theme).
