[Afamilyatwar-list] Sefton Briggs and Arthur Corby

Sam is really a splendid series, and it really needs to be seen to counter the silliness of Downton Abbey (sorry, fans!) and Benny Hill. I see Talking Puctures ads on Twitter and there is such a wealth of wonderful Brtish shows that demand to come ‘lout of the closet” (“out from the attic”?)—everything John Finch penned and so much from the early 70s instead of the glammed-up 1990s. I’m certain enough exists that wasn’t wiped to make up some decent programming. I just found a reference to a 1971 version of The Woodlanders with Michael Goodliffe (from Sam) that looks stunning! I think I’ll hit my Twitter account!

They do look rather alike, which I hadn’t really registered.

Sorry about that ridiculously long link!

I had a thought about Sam: the Talking Pictures TV people – actually a man and his daughter, from what I can make out, and they run it from the man’s home – anyway, they like to hear from their audiences. Suppose some of us contacted him suggesting that they show Sam; after all, they have been or are showing AFAW. It would of course be of no help to those in the US.

If you have to ask, you cannae answer the question.

Isn’t Arthur a meaner, lower version of Sefton—both after “the main chance” (a bit o’ brass) and to hell with people?

At least that’s the impression I get from Ivor Roberts....Maybe because they look somewhat alike—tatty business suits and a mocking attitude.

And indeed I think Sam is a more rounded version of David—more tragic (parentless, functionally), more doomed by his environment.

Calling Emile Zola!
