Indeed! I’ve seen To Serve Them and enjoyed it very much. I’ve always been a fan of Frank Middleton since seeing him originally as Kutuzov in War and Peace. I’ve taken up many of the recommendations made by AFAW fans (thanks be to my multiregion DVD player)! Withdrawal is hard, but backup makes it tolerable! Sefton, where art thou?...

To Serve Them All My Days (1980) is set mainly in a boys’ public school, but David Powlett-Jones (John Duttine) is the son and brother of Welsh miners, so there is some class tension. He’s sent to the school to teach history as a kind of occupational therapy, as he’s had a bad case of shell-shock in the Great War. He’s quite a radical, especially compared to most of the masters. He gives a great performance, as does Neil Stacy as the science master who runs the OTC. I saw it at the time, and am watching the DVDs now.

Richard, 20,000 Streets was tremendous!

I thank all the wonderful AFAW fans who have made these recommendations. I’ve made a list and am checking it twice! Nobody’s been naughty because everyone’s been nice! Between the library and Amazon I have several series to investigate. I even received a response from the son of Colin Douglas! Now THAT’S a fan base! Quite!

In my opinion, John Finch's A Family at War is the finest television series ever. The writing and acting are superb, unfailingly strong throughout the 52 episodes. The WW2 period is captured with a perceptive honesty, and we care deeply about the characters.

But it goes without saying that there are many other series that are also well worth seeing. Here are my personal favourites, with five in each category:

DRAMA

Sam [also by John Finch]

Foyle's War

Upstairs Downstairs

Danger UXB

20,000 Streets Under the Sky

COMEDY

Dad's Army

You Rang, M'Lord?

Goodnight Sweetheart

Fawlty Towers

Keeping Up Appearances

Thanks to all of you for the great suggestions!
