Hello Richard and Lesley,
I think the darkness and dampness must have added to the sheer terror people would have felt. I’m sure my aunt had an Anderson shelter because I remember nights in the shelter being mentioned a long time ago, but I was too young to be very interested, so didn’t ask any questions (as so often the case). I don’t ever recall seeing any evidence of it in their garden.
An uncle was said to have suffered badly with his nerves after experiencing air raids in Birmingham, which is easy to imagine. My parents said that they didn’t know how they were able to go to work the day after a raid, or if they were doing fire watching – but they did!

Very interesting article, Christine! Thanks for sending.
Edwin Ashton's Anderson shelter is seen and/or mentioned in six episodes (7, 10, 12, 14, 18, and 19).
Sheila Ashton's Morrison shelter (essentially a protective wire cage beneath a sturdy table) is seen and/or mentioned in three episodes (18, 25, and 43).

An article about Anderson shelters which of course made me think of AFAW.
