[Afamilyatwar-list] Edwin & Jean

Hi, Jane and All.

I don't think Jean ever forgave Edwin for allowing Robert to enlist at
such an young age (16). The sorrow and/or depression seemed to hasten her
final illness and death. Personally, I cannot be too hard on Edwin. A war
was raging, Britain's survival was at stake, and most families had loved
ones serving in the military. The Ashtons were not alone in dreading a
telegram from the War Office. Also, Robert did express his desire to go to
sea, so his father was merely acceding to that wish. Sorry to say, I sense
that Jean did not have enough respect for her fine, upstanding husband,
and perhaps the Briggs-Ashton separation in class had something to to with
that. Jean could be a bit snobbish at times, as evidenced (in a
black-and-white episode) when she and Edwin visited his family home.
