CARLSBAD, Calif. – Opening Monday’s final round of stroke play at the NCAA Championship with 11-consecutive pars, Baylor junior Yurang Li was in position to finish in the top 15 and cap off an impressive debut season with the Bears.

But the California native and Illinois transfer struggled down the stretch, starting with a three-putt bogey on the par-3, 163-yard third hole, shooting 9-over-par 81 and finishing tied for 42nd in the tournament with a 72-hole total of 6-over 294.

“The thing I told her was, she went toe-to-toe with the best players in college golf for 65 holes,” Baylor coach Jay Goble said. “She just hit a rough patch in those final seven holes. But I know Yurang will be back here next year, and she’s going to finish what she started this week. I can tell you, we would never have made it this far without her, and she’s been an unbelievable teammate.”

Li became the third Baylor player in the last five years to advance to the final round of stroke play, tied for 18th through 54 holes at 3-under 213 on the challenging Omni La Costa Resort and Spa North Course.

She won medalist honors twice this season and finished with a 72.89-stroke average, playing 37 rounds over 12 tournaments.

As a team, Baylor finished 25th in its sixth-consecutive NCAA Championship appearance, shooting 22-over 886.

Top-ranked Stanford finished first in the team standings with a 72-hole total of 22-under-par 1,130 and will be the No. 1 seed for Tuesday’s match play quarterfinals. USC finished second, followed by Arkansas, Texas, Eastern Michigan, Oklahoma State, Duke and Pepperdine. The Waves beat Iowa State by one shot to earn the No. 8 seed for match play.

Winning medalist honors by two shots over Stanford’s Megha Ganne, Farah O’Keefe of Texas shot 2-under 70 on Monday and 12-under 276.

Golf Channel will air Tuesday’s match play quarterfinals and semifinals and Wednesday’s championship final.
