WACO, Texas – No. 11 Baylor men’s tennis advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 4-0 decision over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at the Hurd Tennis Center on Friday night.



Baylor (23-9) secured the doubles point before picking up singles victories from Zsombor Velcz, Luc Koenig and Devin Badenhorst to clinch the first-round tournament victory against Tulsa (19-13). The Bears controlled the match all night on their way to a clean 4-0 sweep, moving on to round two.



THE RUNDOWN

After a back-and-forth discussion on weather delays, Baylor kicked off hosting the first round of the NCAA Tournament outside at the Hurd Tennis Center. Starting in doubles, Calvin Baeirl and Devin Badenhorst dominated on Court Three, defeating Takeshi Taco and Ruben Fernandez, 6-1. Alexandru Chirita and Zsombor Velcz took down Connor Doig and Calum Jestin, 6-4, on Court Two to secure the doubles point for the Bears.



In singles, Velcz took care of business on Court Two, beating Timothy Carlsson Seger 6-2, 6-3, giving Baylor a 2-0 lead. Next, Koenig took down Reiya Komagata 6-3, 7-5 on Court Five, extending the Baylor lead to 3-0. Badenhorst clinched the victory for the Bears with a three-set 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 win over Nikita Volonski on Court One.



STAT OF THE MATCH

With the win, Baylor moves to 24-4 all time in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Baylor men’s tennis takes on No. 22 Auburn tomorrow night at 6 p.m. CT at the Hurd Tennis Center in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a spot on the Sweet 16 on the line.
