WACO, Texas – No. 38 Baylor (11-6) bested No. 39 University of San Diego (9-8) 4-1 on Tuesday at the Hurd Tennis Center. The Bears clinched the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. In singles, BU sealed the match with victories on courts 2, 5, and 6. USD secured a win at No. 3 singles but could not rally a comeback.

THE RUNDOWN

BU grabbed the doubles point with triumphs at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Zuzanna Kubacha and Gabrielle Villegas dominated with a 6-0 win over Anni Moll and Hannah Read at No. 1 doubles, not dropping a single game. Na Dong and Alian Zack secured the point with a 6-3 victory against Vilma Krebs-Hyllested and Maria Shmakova at No. 2 doubles.

The Toreros took the win at No. 3 doubles, as Charlotte Keitel and Kristina Nordikyan defeated Luna Ivkovic and Neda Rahimkhani, 6-4.

In singles, Baylor widened the lead with No. 120 Kubacha's commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory over Krebs-Hyllested at No. 2 singles, marking a flawless day for Kubacha as she didn't drop a game in either doubles or singles.

USD answered back at No. 3 singles with Read, ranked No. 119, securing a 6-2, 6-0 win against Kennedy Gibbs. Baylor extended its advantage with Ivkovic's 6-1, 7-5 win over Moll at No. 6 singles.

QUOTABLE

Head Coach Joey Scrivano

Overall thoughts on the match…

"Yeah, really good team win, you know, I am proud of the entire team. They came out in the doubles on fire and ready to go, and I just loved their attitude. And then in singles, you know, it's tennis, it's a long day at the office, so they had to maintain their focus and their energy level. But I love the way they did that, especially the freshmen. They really carried us and pushed the team over the finish line. So we needed that and they needed it too, you know, the freshmen are a big part of what we're doing. I'm glad to see them pull through."

On Zuzanna Kubacha’s performance…

"Oh, Zuza, yeah, I mean Zuza is so good. She's just so good. I mean, her and Na [Dong] are just interchangeable, they're two of the best players in the country. That definitely started us off on the right foot."
