Baylor MBB Bounces Back and Breaks West Virginia’s Home Winning Streak, 63-53

MORGANTOWN, W.V. – In a must-win game, Baylor men’s basketball showcased gritty toughness at Hope Coliseum on Saturday afternoon to earn its second conference win, returning to Waco with a 63-53 victory.



Baylor (12-9, 2-7) grabbed its ninth program win in Morgantown, snapping West Virginia’s (14-7, 5-3) 16-home game winning streak, the longest home winning streak in the Big 12 dating back to last year. BU’s nine wins at Hope Coliseum underneath head coach Scott Drew are the most by any Big 12 team.



BU was led by three Bears in double-figures, including Cameron Carr and Obi Agbim both with 16 points with six made field goals. Agbim put up the most points in his Big 12 conference season with the help of four made threes. Carr earned his third double-double of the season with a career-high of 12 rebounds.



Freshman Tounde Yessoufou finished with 11 points with Dan Skillings Jr. right behind him with nine points on five rebounds.



The first half proved to be crucial on the offensive end for Baylor, who shot 56-percent in the first 20 minutes compared to WVU’s 41-percent to go into the half leading 38-30. Baylor is undefeated when leading at the half this season.



As a team for the 40-minute battle, Baylor converted 16 points off 13 Mountaineer turnovers while outrebounding WVU narrowly, 33-32, to come home from its road swing with a win.



THE RUNDOWN

Agbim and Carr got the Bears rolling with back-to-back made threes to give BU an early lead in Morgantown. A 13-2 run over three minutes forced the Mountaineers to a timeout and gave the Bears a nine-point lead at the under-16.



The offensive attack lulled with three turnovers in the following three minutes, but the Bears’ defense held strong, forcing WVU to one of its last seven field goals and still leading 15-8.



The Mountaineers kept persisting, coming back from Baylor’s 10-point lead to take the lead after enforcing a 15-2 run, taking the advantage 20-17.



Two fast buckets by Yessoufou and Skillings Jr. kept the Bears at bay coming out of a timeout, while Carr sank a fouled on three-pointer to give Baylor back the lead. The Bears kept their foot on the pedal, going on a 7-0 run and forcing a 32-24 score at the final media timeout of the half.



A driving dunk by Carr put him in double-digits in the first half for the 16th time this season. With the help of seven made threes in the first half, the most since BU’s win at Oklahoma State, the Bears went into the half with a lead of 38-30.



A dicey first five minutes of the second half ensued with the Mountaineer fanbase getting vocal, but the Bears held on to its lead, 45-40.



The senior Agbim drove into the paint to give him his second straight game in double-figures. West Virginia kept chipping away, forcing Baylor to a five-minute scoring drought. On the defensive end, BU held WVU to one of its last nine field goals while forcing four turnovers, still maintaining a 49-44 advantage.



After missing its last 13 field goal attempts, Agbim found a way and made a crucial three. He followed up with another big bucket from behind the arc to give him his most points in Big 12 play, up 57-51.



That was enough for Baylor to come away with a 10-point margin of victory, 63-53, and earn its second conference win, snapping its four-game losing streak.
