WACO, Texas – After an early deficit, No. 16 Baylor women’s basketball took control and pulled away for a 79-64 win over Kansas on Sunday afternoon at Foster Pavilion.

The Jayhawks opened the day with two quick layups, but Darianna Littlepage-Buggs answered immediately, scoring back-to-back layups to put Baylor on the board. The Bears then surged ahead for a quick lead, sparked by a jumper from Kiersten Johnson and a 3-pointer from Bella Fontleroy.

Baylor’s defense quickly set the tone, holding Kansas without a field goal for more than five minutes as the Bears rattled off an 11-1 run. Taliah Scott knocked down a jumper during the surge, and Kyla Abraham capped the stretch with a steal-and-score finish as BU closed the opening quarter with a 17-9 advantage.

Scott provided a dominant scoring presence to open the second quarter, trading baskets with the Jayhawks while accounting for the Bears’ first 10 points of the period. Kayla Nelms connected from beyond the arc to push the lead back into double figures, and Scott closed the half in rhythm, knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers to send the Bears into the locker room with a 44-30 lead.

Kansas opened the third quarter with four straight points before Jana Van Gytenbeek knocked down her first field goal of the afternoon. Littlepage-Buggs made her presence felt again, securing her double-double off an offensive rebound while continuing to anchor Baylor on the boards.

After a short scoring lull by both teams, the BU offense reignited behind Fontleroy and Van Gytenbeek, who buried back-to-back 3-pointers to stretch the lead to 17. Nelms followed with an and-one finish, and Marcayla Johnson added her first basket of the game as the Bears carried a 62-43 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Yuting Deng opened the final period with a 3-pointer to give BU its largest lead of the afternoon, but Kansas mounted a late push with a 9-0 response. The Bears answered, as Littlepage-Buggs and Fontleroy delivered back-to-back layups to maintain control midway through the last stanza.

Van Gytenbeek joined Littlepage-Buggs and Scott in double figures as Baylor closed out the game at the free-throw line. Scott finished with a game-high 24 points, while Littlepage-Buggs posted 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Littlepage-Buggs was a perfect 7-of-7 from the field, marking the second time in her career she has shot 1.000 with at least five attempts, and added a season-high assist total to cap off her performance.

The Bears finished with an edge in second-chance points, claiming 19 for their most so far in conference play and the second most this season.

BU has a two-game road trip awaiting in Utah, as it is set to face the Utes on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. CT and the BYU Cougars on Saturday at 3 p.m. Both games will be live on ESPN+ and the Baylor Sports Media Network.
