WG: Castro Shoots 67, Finishes Career-Best 2nd Place

HUMBLE, Texas – Weathering some tough conditions at the end of Tuesday’s final round, Baylor sophomore Malena Castro shot a bogey-free 5-under 67 and had a career-best second-place finish at the Chevron Collegiate to help the 20th-ranked Bears finish third overall in an elite field.

Surrounded by four other top-20 teams, Baylor recorded its third-consecutive sub-par round on the par-72 layout at Golf Club of Houston to shoot 11-under 853 and finish third behind 16th-ranked North Carolina (18-under, 846) and No. 3 Oregon (12-under, 852).

“It got a lot tougher our last couple holes, and we finished on some really tough holes,” said Baylor coach Jay Goble, whose team has recorded top-five finishes in each of its eight tournaments this year. “We tried to hang on, but I think everybody was kind of losing strokes at the end.

“We are very close to playing some really good golf. More than anything, we just need to clean up a few mistakes that we made toward the end of the round today. It was just not as clean as we’d like for it to be.”

Starting the day five shots behind North Carolina and one up on Oregon, the Bears got back within two strokes at one point before struggling on the closing holes.

Earning her third top-five finish of the season and seventh consecutive in the top 15, Castro birdied two of her first three holes to jump up the leader board and then closed with three birdies in her last five holes to finish at 5-under for the day and 7-under 209 for the 54-hole tournament.

“She didn’t ride the emotional roller coaster that she sometimes rides when she plays,” Goble said of Castro, who hasn’t finished outside of the top 25 this year. “That’s the big part of her success today, in my opinion, was that she kept her cool the whole day and just hit the shot that was in front of her. That’s really what good golf is. It’s kind of boring looking sometimes, but she just hits fairways and greens and good putts. And that equals a 67.”

Despite bogeys on four of her last five holes, Silje Ohma shot even-par 72 for the day and tied for 11th at 2-under 214. After some front-nine troubles, junior transfer Yurang Li recorded two birdies and no bogeys on the back nine to shoot 1-over 73 and tie for ninth at 3-under 213, her fourth top-10 finish of the season.

Freshman Amelia Wan survived a triple-bogey on the par-4 11th hole to shoot 3-over 75 and tie for 33rd at 2-over 218, while Bridget Boczar shot 5-over 77 and tied for 52nd at 5-over 221.

“Ther’s no doubting the potential that I have on this team,” Goble said. “Like I said, we just need to clean some things up. I promise you, if we all play good at the same time,  we’re going to lap people. It just hasn’t happened yet.”

Next up for the Bears will be a trip to Las Vegas for the UNLV Invitational March 2-3 at Las Vegas Country Club.
