WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 6 Baylor men’s tennis, who beat the Demon Deacons last weekend in Waco, couldn’t quite get it done in a rematch on the road in Winston-Salem, falling 4-2 at No. 4 Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon.



The Bears (7-4) claimed two ranked singles wins, but the Demon Deacons (11-2) secured the doubles point and added three singles victories to clinch the match.



THE RUNDOWN

Wake Forest took the early 1-0 lead by winning two of three doubles courts. Baylor’s duo of Alexandru Chirita and Zsombor Velcz started the race hot with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 position, but the Deacons prevailed on Courts One and Three to secure the point with the help of its No. 2 ranked duo of Suresh and Delgado.



In singles, No. 13 Devin Badenhorst put Baylor on the board with a commanding 6-1, 6-4 victory over No. 17 DK Suresh at the top spot to earn his second victory over the top ranked Demon Deacon. No. 27 Connor Van Schalkwyk followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win against No. 65 Aryan Shah at No. 3 singles, tying the match 2-2 after Wake Forest first took Court Five over Luc Koenig.



Wake Forest answered with straight-set wins at No. 2 singles to regain control before clinching the team victory at the No. 4 position. No. 21Luca Pow rallied past No. 73 Chirita, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-2, to seal the 4-2 result. The match at No. 6 singles between Joaquin Guilleme and Louis Bowden was left unfinished.





In Singles, Wake Forest was able to strike first, winning Court Five 6-3, 6-1, extending their lead to 2-0. Devin Badenhorst got Baylor on the board with a 6-1, 6-4 win on Court One, making the score 2-1 Deacons. Wake Forest then struck back with a 6-2, 6-2 win on Court Two, padding their lead up to 3-1. Connor Van Schalkwyk kept the Bears in the fight with a 6-3, 6-4 win on Court Three, cutting the deficit down to 3-2. With a 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 win on Court Four, The Demon Deacons were able to clinch a 4-2 match victory.

Baylor continues its road swing and takes on the Illinois Fighting Illini on Friday, Feb. 27th in Urbana-Champaign at 6 p.m. CT.
