T&F Heading Back to Lubbock for Jarvis Scott Invite
Kelley hoping to improve on conference-leading mark in 200 meters

LUBBOCK, Texas – While Tiriah Kelley and Molly Haywood will try to improve on marks that are already ranked in the top three in the country, Baylor coach Michael Ford said this is a “critical” week for some of the other athletes to move up in the conference and national rankings.

After back-to-back out-of-state meets, the Bears will return to the Texas Tech Sports Performance for the second of three trips this season for the Jarvis Scott Invite that begins Friday with field events at 2 p.m. and the running prelims at 3.

“I think it’s extremely important,” Ford said. “I definitely stressed to the kids this week and last week – I’m always looking at who’s in the top 20 going into conference  - it’s just critical for them to kind of get up there on the list. I think on the men’s side, we have maybe 12 guys that are in the top 20 in their individual events. And probably about the same on the ladies’ side.”

On this same track, Kelley ran a 22.56 time in the 200 (22.63, adjusted for altitude) at the Corky Classic that at that point was the No. 1 time in the world.

“I thought she looked really good there,” Ford said of Kelley running 22.74 and beating South Carolina’s Alexis Brown at last weekend’s Carolina Classic. “I still feel like she could drop that time a little bit more. Technically, without the altitude adjustment, I think her time would still be probably No. 2.”

Haywood’s season PR of 15-0 came the following week at the Ted Nelson Invitational in College Station. She still has the No. 2 mark in the country behind Washington’s Hanna Moll, who cleared 16-0 at the UW Invite a week later.

Primarily with those two marks, the Baylor women are 24th in the updated USTFCCCA rankings that we released earlier this week.

Sophomore long jumper Janae De Gannes is just outside of the top 16 for a qualifying spot for the NCAA Indoor Championships that will be held next month in Fayetteville, Ark. She recorded a season-best mark of 20 feet, 11 ¾ inches at the Carolina Classic, which ranks fourth in the Big 12 and tied for 18th nationally.

On the men’s side, Demario Prince is third in the Big 12 and ninth nationally with a time of 7.59 in the 60-meter hurdles, just off his school-record time of 7.57. But Prince will take this week off to rest up for the Big 12 Championships in two weeks.

“I think the kids that are ranked fairly high, like Tiriah, Demario and Molly, I think they’re solid,” Ford said. “They’ve just got to kind of maintain and stay healthy. But the rest of them, if they’re looking forward to going (to NCAA Championships), we need to make some strides this week.”

Distance coach David Barnett will take Amon Malakwen and Ruth Kimeli to the David Hemery Valentine Invite in Boston.
