COLUMBIA, S.C. – Making the most of a limited number of entries, Baylor track and field capped off the Carolina Classic with five more event titles on Saturday – eight total – and swept the 4x400 relays.

Tiriah Kelley, who still has the second-fastest time in the nation, swept to another 200-meter title and remained unbeaten in the event with a time of 22.74 that ranks as the fifth-best in program history.

The senior sprinter also ran a 53-second anchor leg on the 4x400-meter relay, which won in a season-best time of 3:39.87. Junior Serafima Lucero ran the leadoff leg, followed by freshmen Alyssa Jones and Jada Edwards, who handed the stick to Kelley with a comfortable lead.

“They still need to drop some more, but it was definitely a big improvement from last week to this week,” Baylor coach Michael Ford said. “I thought the two freshmen in the middle ran better. One ran 56 last week and the other one ran 57, and they were both 55 today.”

Despite running in a slower heat, the Baylor men’s relay of Tyler Honeyman, Malik Franklin, Bailey Hashmi and Abbas Ali clocked a 3:11.10 time to beat out East Carolina, North Carolina A&T and South Carolina out of the first heat.

The men’s only other event win of the day came from freshman Landon Freeman, who went 6-11 ½ in the high jump to capture his first collegiate title. But the Bears also got a runner-up finish by Aren Spencer in the 300 meters (34.08), a third place by Hashmi in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 21.17 and a fifth by Sebastian Berntsen in the long jump (23-2 ¾).

Senior Tenly Kuhn got a big win in the pole vault, going a season-best 14-0 ½ to edge South Carolina’s Jathiyah Muhammad. Tied for fourth nationally coming into the meet with a season-best vault of 14-9, Muhammad matched Kuhn at 14-0 ½, but had one more miss.

“For those two (Kelley and Kuhn) to beat some good people on their home track, I thought that was really important,” Ford said. “We’ve got to think about things we have to improve on in the next three weeks before Big 12. But what I liked about this meet was how we competed. In track, you’ve got to beat people.”

Sophomore Janae De Gannes finished second in the long jump with a season-best mark of 20-11 ¾ that ranks just outside the top 16 at 17th nationally. Sydney Smith went 5-6 for another runner-up finish in the high jump.

In their fifth-consecutive week of competition, the Bears will head back to Lubbock next week for the Jarvis Scott Invitational.
