COLUMBIA, S.C. – Making it through three rounds on Friday’s opening day of the Carolina Classic, Baylor senior Demario Prince kept his unbeaten streak alive in the 60-meter hurdles, winning by the slimmest of margins with a time of 7.621.
In the finals, Prince edged Jason Holmes of North Carolina A&T by a mere four thousandths of a second in a photo finish where Holmes was clocked at 7.625. Winning at last weekend’s DeLoss Dodds Invitational with a new meet and facility record time of 7.59, Prince now owns nine of the Bears’ all-time top-10 best in the event.
Freshman Werner Bezuidenhout also made it through the three-round event, placing fifth in a time of 8.09 in his first collegiate final.
Baylor picked up two other event wins on Friday, with junior hurdler Serafima Lucero winning the 400 meters with a time of 54.00 and sophomore Iyanna Webb claiming gold in the triple jump with a mark of 41 feet, 4 ¼ inches.
Between the men and women, the Bears took home a combined seven top-10 finishes in the 400 meters. Sameena Mathew (fifth, 56.26), Aaronya Kinchen (seventh, 56.88) and Cymia Yourish (10th, 57.32) followed Lucero in the women’s 400, while Abbas Ali (fifth, 47.50), Malik Franklin (sixth, 47.68) and Tyler Honeyman (eighth, 48.15) were the top finishers for the men.
The 22nd-ranked Baylor women also put three into the finals of the 60 meters, with Hannah Lowe third (7.44), Royaltee Brown seventh (7.54) and freshman Success Oyibu eighth (7.59).
