WACO, Texas – The Baylor women’s tennis team is set to host two weekend matches at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center, welcoming Rice on Friday at noon followed by No. 23 Washington on Sunday, also at noon.



Baylor (2-1) enters the weekend holding an 18-match win streak over Rice (3-2) while Washington (3-0) owns a narrow 4-3 advantage in the all‑time series.



The last meeting between Baylor and Rice came in January 2023, when the Bears extended their dominant streak over the Owls with a 4-3 win in Waco. This season, Rice most recently dropped a 4-0 decision to TCU on Feb. 1.



The Owls’ roster does not feature any nationally ranked singles players, but their doubles team of Darya Schwartzman and Uma Bakaityte is ranked No. 28 with a 6-3 overall record this year.



Washington, Baylor’s first ranked foe of the season, comes to Central Texas at No. 23 in the ITA rankings with a 3-0 start to its season. The Huskies’ three wins have come against Hawaii, Boise State and Portland while allowing just four points total.



The Huskies do not field any ranked doubles pairings but feature three ranked singles players: No. 53 Reece Carter, No. 64 Erika Matsuda and No. 115 Anna-Marie Weissheim.



The Bears have five ranked entries after the first spring rankings were released, including back-to-back doubles listings with Kennedy Gibbs and Na Dong at No. 70 and Dong with Zuzanna Kubacha at No. 71. In singles, Dong is ranked No. 62, Kubacha No. 89 and freshman Mu-Jie Tzeng at No. 98.



In their most recent outing against SMU, the Bears struck first in doubles as Gibbs and Alian Zack dominated Court Two, 6-1. The Mustangs, however, claimed Courts One and Three to secure the doubles point. In singles, Kubacha was first off the court with a 6-3, 6-1 win on Court Two to even the match at 1-1. SMU responded with victories on Courts Six and Four to build a 3-1 lead before clinching in a tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot.

A Cub Tennis clinic is scheduled to begin one hour before first serve on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT. The Baylor Cub Tennis program is open to children ages 3-11 and gives participants the opportunity to learn basic tennis skills from Baylor student-athletes and staff. All equipment will be provided, though participants are encouraged to wear athletic apparel and tennis shoes.
